Kelsey spun around, scanning the gathered throng in the sorority house living room. Her attention had been on the list of men supposed to show for the auction. One had bailed—sick, apparently—but the others had all shown. The bidding had already been brisk, which was great news. More than half of the ‘bachelors’ had been landed, and whisked away by the lucky winners.

But Max was still nowhere to be found.

Until now.

Several of the new ‘couples’ were chatting and laughing, some mixed in with the crowd seeming intent on watching the remainder of the auctions.

Others wasted no time, vanishing so quickly with their spoils, the gathered girls laughed, making ribald comments along the lines of “Five bucks she fucks him in the car,” or “Damn, that girl wasn’t even trying to hide the fact her bachelor’s getting laid tonight.”

She could only imagine what might be happening upstairs later that night.

The sofas in the living room had both been turned around to face the open stairway rising up behind them, the view allowing the poor males to stand partway up the stairs, only the slender, white-painted spindles of the bannister blocking the view of the men on auction that night.

The girls were piled on the furniture, plenty of them spilling out onto the floor, with more than a few standing at the back of the living room, too. Numerous sisters had red plastic cups in their hands, or clasped between their legs. The smell of weed and cigarette smoke was distinct on the air, despite both being ‘officially’ banned in the house.

She didn’t even want to think about what was likely going on outside on the back porch.

Kelsey cringed inside at the cliché of it, but there was nothing for it.

Drinking was ‘officially’ discouraged during the auctions but in practice, she knew more than a few were on their way to being trashed. Afterward, the house was liable to be a complete madhouse.

But if things went according to plan, that wouldn’t matter.

He’d just slipped in the front door, talking with Mandy, the sister greeting all the auction candidates. Mandy’s fingers played with the ends of her long black hair as she talked with him. He grinned once, and the giggling Mandy’s blush filled Kelsey with a surprising irritation.

You don’t own him, idiot.

The charcoal-colored suit flattered him more than she was expecting. Max wasn’t especially tall, being just over six feet, but he was powerfully built, his body not so much stocky as solid.

As a rock.

The cut of the rich cloth emphasized the true breadth of his shoulders and the depth of his chest. His closely cropped hair and neatly trimmed beard were both frosted with just enough gray, perfectly matching his sartorial taste.

Though she’d always thought of him as a more laid back, ‘salt of the earth’ sort of man, the sophisticated handsomeness he brought tonight had more than one head turning.

And she didn’t like that. At all.

Don’t you think if you didn’t like bitches ogling him, maybe having him in the auction might be the worst possible thing you could do?

But that wasn’t quite it. She did like the girls checking him out—but only in the context of her showing him off. The rank possessiveness of it made her wince a tiny bit, but as sins went, she figured her selfish, territorial feelings regarding Max were probably quite a ways down the list of moral and ethical no-nos.

Everyone there knew that more than a few of the ‘winners’ tonight were going to be engaged in a whole mess of sinning later in the evening.

Cassandra, one of the seniors, brushed by, trailing her hand along Kelsey’s shoulder as she did.

“That… is one delicious male specimen.” Flicking a glance toward Max, she winked at Kelsey, her voice a purr. “I think I just decided what I’m bidding on tonight.”

Kelsey’s flare of jealousy was as intense as it was inappropriate. Cassandra was one of the most beautiful girls in the whole sorority—in a house already filled to overflowing with pretty women. She was tall and well-endowed, her eyes a dark, almost mesmerizing blue that were all the more striking against her thick chestnut hair, the ends of which curled just above the generous swell of the girl’s ass. Said backside was itself currently clutched in the flattering embrace of a snug navy mid-length skirt, set off against a sleeveless knit turtleneck the color of rich cream.

Cassandra was nice enough, fortunately, but she made it clear without saying a word that she knew how gorgeous she was, the cool alpha bitch who didn’t need to demonstrate her place at the top of the social strata.

Everyone just knew, simply looking at her.

Kelsey grimaced, watching the girl saunter toward Max. His eyes fluttered for a split second when he spotted her approach, then his effortless poise asserted itself once more as he gave Cassandra a subtle nod and a half smile while he shook the woman’s hand.

He thinks she’s hot. Fuck.

“You gonna stand here and watch the birds pick his carcass to pieces?” Amber tipped her head toward him. “Or maybe you’ll decide to save your hottie for yourself?”
