His boots thumped on the warm golden oak floor and he walked directly to the windows she had shuttered for privacy with blinds and curtains.

Reaching out, he trailed a fingertip over one curtain. She could almost hear his judgment.

“What happened to your great condo?” He faced her.

“Wanted a change.”

“You had the best view in the city. Everything was brand-new. Modern.”

“There’s nothing wrong with this apartment.” Oh, why was she defending it? She’d only give him more ammo.

He looked around.

After a long beat of silence, she threw up her hands. “All right. Let’s hear it.”

Dark eyes flashed to hers. “It’s worse than I imagined. You moved from that fantastic condo—and I know you could afford it—to an all-beige apartment.”

She resisted the urge to slide her gaze left and right and see what he was seeing. It wasn’t all beige.

Okay. Damn, it was. But so what?

He took a step toward her, making her insides flutter. “What are you trying to do, Indika? Stop living? Punish yourself by living an all-beige life?”

His body was so close to hers. And hersachedfor him.

“Cupcake—”

The nickname he used to call her jerked her back to reality.

“Don’t call me that. Nobody wants to be a fattening treat.”

He leaned close. His lips hovered a tiny breath from hers. Her eyelids drooped and her pussy squeezed in reaction to his nearness. “I was thinking more like decadent and irresistible…”

Her breaths came in short pants.

Apollo straightened. He returned to the window and flicked open the beige blinds. A slit of light flashed before he let it fall shut again. “Whatareyou doing, Indika?”

She understood what he was asking.

“What do you want me to say? That a part of me died with you that day?”

His stare drilled into her. “That’s what it’s starting to seem like.”

She crossed the living room to stand as far from his reach as possible. Though one look could drag her back to him. And words could do worse damage.

“I made some changes, that’s all,” she breezed out, reaching for the bottle of rum on the bar cart. “I’m fine.”

She poured a splash into the bottom of a glass and tossed it back. When a wall of heat rippled up her spine that had nothing to do with a few ounces of alcohol in her system, she held her breath, aware that Apollo was right behind her. Almost touching her.

God, she wanted him to touch her.

“Do you know why I can’t stay away from you?” His low voice washed over her ear, along with warm breath.

Her heart pounded.

“You make me feel alive, Indika.”

She almost whirled into his arms and threw herself into a kiss she’dmorethan regret.
