By the time she stepped into the living room, she already knew AJ wasn’t in her apartment.

She might still catch a glimpse of him leaving if she hurried.

Moving to the window took time she didn’t want to waste. Whatever he was doing, she knew it didn’t involve buying more hot dogs.

He was up to something.Again.How long before he vanished without a word?

When she peeked through the beige blinds, she scanned the sidewalk below. She didn’t see his dark head or broad shoulders.

She held her breath, waiting. But he didn’t appear.

What did she think she would catch him doing? He’d managed to fly under the radar of two Blackout teams, the governmentanda terrorist group. The man couldn’t be caught.

With a sigh, she turned from the window. What she needed was her own life back. Her work was a huge part of that.

She grabbed some water from the fridge and sat down at her desk. Opening her work email, she already knew the more sensitive material wouldn’t come through that channel. She was right—there were a few bland department notices and one about a birthday party for their director this afternoon.

Well, she wouldn’t be making it for cake and ice cream. She let out a sigh and scrubbed a fingertip lightly between her brows.

Seeing that she wouldn’t get any gratification from emails, she texted Brown. He read the message but several minutes passed without a response. Of course he was busy. It was the middle of the workday. They never had time to stand around chatting. Their whole department was on the go from the minute they hit their office.

She issued a sigh and propped her elbows on the desk, then rested her head in her hands.

When the door opened behind her, she whipped out of her chair and whirled to face AJ.

“Damn, that hurt.” She breathed shallowly through the pain in her side and pressed a hand over it.

He slammed the door and reached her in a few strides. “Are you okay?”

“Yes. I just stood up too quick.”

“Let me look at your wound.”

Alarm rose in her. “What? No. I’m not letting you look at my side.”

“I’ve seen every inch of your body, Indika.”

Warmth oozed through her as the memory of what happened the previous night surfaced.

“I’m fine, AJ. It was just a twinge.”

His eyes fixed on her, concern darkening the depths to a near-black color.

She narrowed her eyes on him. “What are you up to?”

“What do you mean?”

“You left.”

“I stepped out.”

She hated how he could school his features and his voice into that easygoing nonchalance. Using it onherwas unforgiveable.

“Okay, so where did you step out to?” She braced a hand on the desk. Damn, that sudden movement really hurt. She better not have popped a staple. Was that even possible? She’d Google it later.

“I just took a phone call.”

“From your doctor? Sparrow? Con?”
