“This is too big to hand off to anyone else.”

Apollo blew out a breath. “Damn. What are we looking at? Another attack?”

“Not yet, but with these new developments, an attack is imminent. Raheem called a meeting with Abubakar’s most trusted advisors last night. It looks like they’re accepting his leadership.”

“Fuck.” He cut his fingers through his hair.

“But this other guy you mentioned—he just had ten million dollars transferred to an account.”

“So he’s backing what?”

Oz shook his head. “From what I can see, he’s going to pay off the advisors and try to overthrow their decision.”

“This is going to get ugly.”

“You’re tellin’ me. One’s fighting with power and one’s appealing to their greed. So which one wins in the end?”

“Fuck if I know.” Oz braced his legs wide in a defensive pose and scanned the entrance of the alley the same way Apollo kept watch on the other end.

“I have to get this intel to Blackout,” Apollo said.

“Will they listen to you?”

“That’s the problem. How do we feed this into their system without giving away who it’s coming from?”

“It’s too sensitive to transmit the same way we delivered the last bits of intelligence,” Oz agreed.

“I’ll have to try to deliver it in person.”

Which meant leaving Indika longer. He told himself she’d be fine. She was on the mend. No one was after her.

So why did it feel so terrible to consider leaving her side for even a few hours?

Oz held out a palm. On it was a thumb drive. “This has everything you need. You know the passcode to access the files.”

He took the thumb drive. “Yeah, I know the drill. If the code’s wrong, the files delete. I’m always astounded by how high-tech your team is.”

Oz’s lips tipped at the corners. “We can teach you our ways.”

Apollo met his stare. He trusted Oz with his life. Joining The Guard would be stepping out of one set of shadows into another.

“I’m giving your offer consideration.”

Oz gave him a nod. “Benefits come in this.” He turned his arm over to show his wrist. The tiny scar where a chip had been implanted shone silvery in the dim light. “The key to the city. Unlocks everything.”

He gripped the drive tighter in his palm. “For now, I’ll stick with passcodes.”

“Watch yourself. Having this kind of dirt on those two leader wannabes is dangerous as hell. One of them gets wind, everyone’s gunning for you.”

One slip could bring down the might of that cell on him.

And on Indika too.

He couldn’t let that happen. If he had to leave her again—

He shut the door on that thought.

“Got it. Thanks, Oz.”
