He waved a hand toward the thick stack she clutched close to her chest. “Nope. Self-explanatory. You can just call someone at the office with questions.”

“Great.”

Apollo had to question why any paper files even existed, but that was the government. Slow to switch to technology. Hell, he saw fax machines not only existing but being used in offices on many occasions.

Another reason to make the sidestep to The Guard. All the James Bond gadgets mixed with the undercover spy work he’d grown used to.

Only used to?

Did he love that work?

Indika had Robert moving toward the door while keeping up a conversation.

Seeing that he had no more purpose to her, Robert gave her a smile and nod. “Well, I’ll see you when you get back in the office, Indika.”

“Thanks for bringing me the files.” Her tone rang with a little too much false cheer.

Apollo gave him a nod of farewell, resisting the urge to plant a boot in his ass and give him a nice shove, and shut the door behind him.

Indika seemed to slump with relief. She bustled over to the desk and dumped the files on top of it. He saw her drag her fingers through her hair.

“Why didn’t you tell him?” Apollo asked.

She spun and leaned against the desk. “You’ve been here every time he’s come over. And you were in the office with me too. I’m pretty sure he got the memo.”

“But you didn’t tell him.” He slowly prowled across the room toward her, locking his stare with hers and refusing to let it go.

“It isn’t like I’m leading him on. You heard me. I practically pushed him out the door too.”

“I didn’t say you led him on. I asked why you didn’t tell him that there will be no dinners or drinks or anything outside the office.” He hooked an arm around her back, pulling her flush against him.

“Aghhh, I’m a wimp, okay? I hate telling people anything that will make them feel bad!”

“You had no trouble telling me to go fuck myself.” His lips quirked at the memory of the first hours of their reunion spent hunting a terrorist through DC.

She barked a laugh that sounded part groan. “That’s because our fighting is foreplay.”

He rocked his hardening cock against her pussy. “Is that so?”

She let out a squeak and threw her arms around his neck.

Suddenly, he stilled. A glimmer of an idea began to form in the back of his mind where the needs of his cock didn’t take complete control.

Indika searched his face. “If you’re worried about Robert, I told you it’s not happening.”

“I know,” he said distractedly. “I’m passionate, impulsive. He’s steadfast…reliable.”

“No, AJ. None of that plays into this—”

He brushed his lips across her brow and let her go. “I have to make a call.”

The idea was taking more shape, the fogged edges not so blurred as they had been seconds before.

After only two steps, he realized he was messing things up. He spun and grabbed Indika up into his arms. He slammed his mouth over hers and delivered a long, thorough kiss that had her fingers dragging over his scalp.

When he broke away and set her on her feet, he smiled down at her. “I’m not upset. I know I’m the only one for you, cupcake. I thought of a way to end this conflict I’ve been dealing with.”

She shook her head, eyes wide. “Alexander James Apollo, is your brain ever going to be normal?”
