“I’ve got Raheem standing in front of me.”

“Fuck, get in there! Go, go!”

He tuned out the voices in his ear and concentrated on staying alive. One slip of a finger on the trigger and he’d erase all the promises he’d made Indika that he’d be here to love her for the rest of their days.

No, goddammit. He wouldn’t break his word.

He hurled himself forward, crashing into Raheem. They flew backward onto the broken and slanted floor.

“You’re done,” he growled into his face.

And pulled the trigger.

SEVENTEEN

“Indika! Indika!”

At the call, she lifted her head. It swam with confusion and pain. Through all of the creaks and groans of a building about to fall, she locked on to the voice.

“Indika, call out!”

“Here.” Her voice was a faint whisper of its usual strength. No wonder when half her body was being crushed.

She tried again. “Here! Here!” On and on she cried the word until her lungs screamed for air.

“Oh god. Fuck. Indika.” He sounded broken. So broken.

AJ’s broad shoulders came into view. She blinked through the thick dust that choked her airway and made her eyes stream.

“Here!” She held out a hand to him, and he clasped it.

“Fuck. You’re so cold. No, no.” He spouted off a jumble of orders she couldn’t make sense of.

All she understood was AJ’s scent and the feel of his hard arm wrapped around her. A cutting noise and shrieks that might have come from her.

Then the pressure leaving her legs.

When she came to, she was staring up at a bright light above her. She made a fist, and her fingers clenched on another hand.

She slowly turned her head to look at AJ. He hovered over where she lay, and his eyes… Oh, his eyes were so filled with love and fear that she couldn’t find any words.

“You’re all right, cupcake. Safe in the hospital. You’re going to be okay.”

It came to her in a rush. The rumble under her feet, the balconies hitting the concrete and that deadweight pinning her.

“My…legs?”

“Bruised. One lower leg has a broken bone. That’s it. You’ll keep your legs and walk. But goddamn if I’m going to let you out of my arms ever again.” A hitching breath stole from him, and she saw tears sparkle in his thick, dark lashes.

Tugging on his hand, she pulled him in closer so she could cup his jaw. “You saved me. How did you ever find me?”

“It was hell. I never want to live through something like that ever again. When I thought I’d lost you…” His voice broke.

“I know,” she soothed. “I know exactly what you mean. But we were both spared and now we’ll never be apart.”

He kissed her with a tenderness that brought tears flooding into her own eyes. “I’m not leaving your side, Indika. I’m through with Blackout. I’m leaving the team.”

Her throat clogged, and she looked into his eyes. “But you love the team. It’s your family.”
