I let out a laugh, turning my head to the side to look at him. “Hope you’re not trying to hurt my feelings. Because I don’t give a fuck. That’s my truth.” Slowly, I lean over and place a quick kiss on his cheek and begin to walk away. When I pass Topher (who’s still standing there making sure his buddy believes the bathroom visit was innocent) I reach out and slap his crotch. “There was that one time.”

He spins around to yell behind me. “No, there wasn’t. Goddamn it, Morgan. I’m trying to keep the fucking peace around here.”

That makes one of us. Because when the space around me is at peace, the noise inside my head gets louder. And right now, I just want them to all shut the fuck up.

CADE

I’d like to say I’m still drunk so I’d actually have a reason to be this fucking stupid. But no. Entirely sober and just a dumbass begging to suffer a little more as I lift my hand and knock against the solid red door.

A minute passes before it opens and Morgan’s mom appears, a warm, welcoming smile on her face. The opposite of what her daughter projects. But there’s some hesitancy as she looks to me. “Hello, Cade. Are you stopping by for Coach? He’s not here, but if you head to Crescent Fleur, I’m sure you’ll catch them still out on the course.” Her friendly smile is contradicting as she goes to shut the door in my face.

“I’m here to see Morgan. Is she around?” I receive a hesitant look after she scans over her shoulder.

“Yes. But I don’t think it’s a good idea for the two of you to hang out together again.” Shelby glances around nervously like she wants to make sure there’s no one to overhear her. And I have a good guess who she’s on the lookout for. “She had a really hard phase with how things ended last time. I don’t want to watch her spiral even worse this go-round.”

“I think she already is.” How else do you explain the hostile tyrant she’s become? “I just need to talk to her a few minutes. That’s all.”

Shelby nods and moves aside to allow me to step into the entry, shutting the door behind me. “She’s out by the pool. I’ll be in the study.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Loud and clear. She’ll be in the room that has a good view of the deck.

With every step I take, I get more and more edgy while considering Mrs. King’s advice and debate hauling ass outta here. But I want to see Morgan’s reaction when I ask my question, and her body is the only thing that doesn’t lie to me constantly. Fuck. It’s on full display too. And not only does it not lie, but it reminds me of how much I want her.

I step beside the lounge chair and stare down at her bare back, the string dangling from her top beside the chair and the thin strip of fabric that’s not covering much of her ass. It takes a little too long to get my head to connect with my mouth as I stand there and stare like an idiot until she says, “What the fuck do you want?”

Answers if she was sleeping, ignoring me, or knew I was here. She always knows. “Just wanted to stop by.” I drop down on the chair beside her and wait for her to look to me. But she doesn’t. “I know you were upset last night, so I figured I’d check on you.”

That makes her turn a disbelieving, go-fuck-yourself expression on me. “Do I look fucking bothered to you?” She rotates, flipping over on the chair, leaving her top under her as she faces the sun, eyes closed. Mine have no place to land other than on her exposed tits, and I huff out a breath, snapping my eyelids closed for a long blink, knowing her mother is watching. “Actually, I am bothered by you interrupting my peaceful day. So, fuck off or at least shut the fuck up.” She lets out a little sigh, her chest rising and falling with slow, even breaths.

“I talked to Fabian last night.” It was only a split second, but I saw it when the muscles in her body tensed up. So I keep going. “He told me what happened.”

Her eyes remain closed. “Good for you. Hope he gave you some good pointers.”

“Yeah, don’t get stabbed.”

She opens her eyes long enough to laugh at me then drapes her arm across her eyes. “It took him telling you that for you to figure it out? You really are a dumbass.”

Her demeanor remains relaxed until I ask, “Did you do it? Did you stab him?”

There’s no change in her position as she lazily responds, “If you have to ask that question, then he didn’t tell you what happened.”

“I know there’s more to the story than him falling and a knife going into his shoulder by chance.”

“All right. Cade.” She lifts her arm to look at me. “You get to play now that he can’t. Did you stab him? Seems like you’d have more motive than anyone since you weren’t shit before you stepped on the field.”

Deflection. I know what she’s doing. I’m almost certain she didn’t do it, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t intentional, and it doesn’t mean she wasn’t behind it. “Well, if you want to stab me, just go for the heart again.” I struggle to grin as she rolls her eyes.

“Noted. You’re a fucking moron. Now go away.” She crosses both arms above her head.

“Don’t you need some lotion rubbed on your back or something?” Fuck. I am a dumbass. But that doesn’t stop my fingers from itching to do what I just volunteered myself for.

But apparently, she’s not feeling it. “What are you, in heat or plain stupid?” She shoves off the chair and stands beside me. “Find some other bitch to spread her legs. Shouldn’t be that difficult according toCoach. There’s a slut at every turn.”

I clasp her hand and pull her onto my lap. My jeans doing nothing to conceal the fucking boner that’s rubbing against her ass. “You don’t want that any more than I do.” Fuck, I need to shut up. But instead, I situate her to straddle me. Her fingers dig into my shoulders as I trail my fingertips up the bare skin of her back before I open my stupid trap again and ask, “What’s really going on in that head of yours, Morgan?”

Her hips rotate slightly as she leans forward, her mouth next to my ear. “Homecoming.”
