“Need a date?” I stupidly offer myself up for sacrifice.

“No.” She laughs. “Just thinking about how your little buddy paid your way and asked me to tell you that the cost was less than expected.”

What the fuck? I knew it was crazy for the price to suddenly drop so drastically. “I’ll be sure to give the rest of the money to him tomorrow.” When the fucking bank opens and I pull it out of my savings, because there’s no way I’m going to let Neil cover it.

“Don’t worry about it. I’m sure it’s a tax write-off for Neil’s parents. You know, a charitable donation.” Her lips trail down my jaw before she moves next to my ear. “Maybe we can fuck a few times at the hotel. But don’t think for a second you’re good enough to be more than that.”

She moves to get off me, but I grip her hips and hold her on my lap. “Who are you going with?”

A devious smile spreads on her lips. “Don’t worry about that either. None of you assholes are worth more than a good laugh or a quick fuck.” She leans back, looking down between us. “And you’re not even worth my time for that today.”

She jerks out of my hold, stands, and casually walks away. I came here to see her face, to see if she would tell me what I wanted to know. And she has. Now I’m certain Morgan King will be my ultimate undoing, because after every cut, each one deeper than the last, I still go back for more. And I’ll keep doing it. There’s no way I’ll sit back and let her mindfuck me all weekend with whatever fuckboy she plans to dangle in front of my face.

CADE

I can’t concentrate for shit. This week has been weird to say the least. Morgan. Neil. Topher. And even a few uneventful moments with Lenny. Everything’s just felt off. And now we’re in the locker room after the damn pep rally, which isn’t my favorite pregame ritual under normal circumstances, but since the one where the video of me fucking Morgan was the main attraction, I’m even less of a fan. At least this one went off without some new broadcast.

My head drops back against the locker with a thud. My eyes close as I shift my thoughts to the game. None of this is important. Just what happens on the field.

“Cade, Coach’s looking for you.” Neil’s unease is evident in his tone before I even look to find his anxious stance.

“Okay.” I’ve been sitting here for the last hour, so Coach couldn’t have tried that hard to find me. I’m in no hurry to hear whatever he’s got to say, so I close my eyes and drop my head back against the locker.

“Are you ready for the game?” Neil asks as he takes a seat beside me.

“Yep. It’s all the other bullshit I’m not looking forward to.”

“About this weekend—”

“Not right now.” I cut him off, then feel a little guilty at the remorse on his face. “I’m not mad. I just wish you wouldn’t have asked her to lie to me. I have enough people lying to me. I can’t have my best friend doing it too.”

“I want it to be a fun weekend.” He shifts and leans back as he lets out a huff. “I’m sure it won’t be though.”

“Why not?” I thought him and Savannah were doing okay. Not great, because Neil still seems a little off. But better. And decent enough to have a good time.

“It’s just—” Neil takes a quick look around. “I don’t care if things go great, I just don’t want them to be a disaster.”

“We don’t have to go.”

He jokes, “You already know it’s gonna suck.”

“That’s not what I’m saying.” I just don’t want to deal with Morgan. “I wish I could focus on the game and not all this other bullshit.” I hold up the homecoming court sash I’d removed from my chest earlier, reminding us both I’m in the running for king.

“Yeah. It must suck to be popular.” Pain. That’s what I hear in his words.

“I’m not popular. I’m the ass of the circus.” I take a few seconds before I add, “The only vote in this place I care about is yours.”

He stands and gives me a genuine smile. “Of course I voted for you.” Then the smile falls away. “Can I confess something to you though?”

When I nod, he moves closer and lowers his voice. “I didn’t vote for Savannah.”

“Um. Why not?”

“I was going to.” He looks down as he picks at his hands. “All I could think about was her winning and some popular jock being crowned king and making her see who she should be with instead of me. Or what if it’s the worst pick who wins? Lenny’d make sure to do more than leave it at their ceremonial dance.” He pauses for a second before he starts speed talking. “I tried to take back my vote, but that bossy woman in the office wouldn’t reset the ballot. I tried. I really did. I’m not a good person.”

“Even the best people make mistakes, man. Don’t stress about it too much. I doubt Savannah cares about all that stuff anyways.”
