My fingers grip the edge of the table. “Not a bad idea. I’m a little dizzy.” I prop my ass on the table and make like I’m about to lie down and lift my legs up. He realizes what I’m doing a second too late. I balance on my side, gripping the table as I thrust my legs forward. And as he’s lunging for me, I kick him right where I’d aimed. His dick.

I’d like to stand over him and laugh for a few seconds. But even this evil villain knows to get the fuck out and not talk or tease. I’m sure Lenny is thinking the same thing or something similar because he’s on his knees, coughing as I run. I don’t know where I’m going. But I know it’s sure as fuck better than here.

I think I’ve been on the ground more than I’ve been on my feet running. It feels like every few steps I take, something trips me. Debris. Furniture. Currently, it’s a hospital bed that I’ve smashed into.

Okay. I need to stop for a second. Gripping the metal rail of the bed, I stand and listen. This place is creepy as fuck. The darkness is darker than I thought possible. But it’s the silence that really puts my nerves on edge. It’s too quiet. A slow drip is the only sound I hear; the echoes of the water seem louder than I thought possible.

My vision has finally adjusted some to the dark. The dim lights of the city shining in the window finally give me something to help figure out where the fuck I’m walking. I could kick myself in the ass for not grabbing Lenny’s phone. Not that I’d want to call anyone, there’s no one I trust. Except my brother. And I wouldn’t want him anywhere close to this knife-wielding lunatic. No, I just could’ve used the damn flashlight to actually see where I’m going.

Slowly taking a few steps around the bed, I keep my eyes on the floor a few feet in front of me, trying to avoid what I can.

“Where are you at, you stupid bitch?” Lenny’s shouts boom through the corridor.

Fuck. Guess he’s done holding his balls. I look around but don’t see any light to indicate he’s close. Fuck, I’ll never make it out before he catches up to me.

Hide. Every muscle in me aches to run, yell, flee this godawful nightmare. But I know that’s not the prudent thing to do. So I duck into one of the nearby rooms and hurry to look out the window.

Holy shit. We’re at least five stories high. That’s a lot of stairs, especially without any damn shoes or light or a fucking clue where I’m at. Because that’s not the city I was expecting to see out the window. That’s not New Orleans. At least not any part of the city I’ve ever seen.

Where the fuck am I?Doesn’t matter. I’m not staying. And I will find a way out of this.

I move to the far side wall near a curtain, my back pressed against the plaster as I slide down, hitting the floor with a thump. Staying here for too long isn’t a good option. But I need to free my hands that are still bound at the wrist. I work on the knot with my teeth, pulling at any part of the rope that gives way. Shit. I need a second to catch my breath too.

That’s not likely when I hear Lenny holler my name again, along with a few vulgar slurs. “Just wait until I find you. You will pay for this.”

He’s almost comical. Like really,I’ll pay for this?He and his spineless bitch started this. Not my fault they couldn’t finish it.

“Come out wherever you are, whore. I know you’re itching to nag me with your bitchy mouth.”

More like itching to smash his fucking skull against the concrete. But I’m not ignorant enough to let my anger win that battle and expose my hiding place to him.

My efforts are finally rewarded when I’m able to pull my wrist out of the rope. My fingers rub over the tender skin as I listen to his continued shouts.

Please keep on, dumbass.I hear him getting farther away from me. And when his voice sounds like it’s a safe distance away, I push off the floor and tiptoe my way to the door. I peek around the doorframe.

Darkness. Nothing. Perfect. Maybe not having light is the best thing. I take off in the opposite direction than I think his voice is reverberating from. But I can’t be sure. The way the sound moves in this structure is strange. Things sound close and far at the same time.

When I finally reach a door that appears to have an exit sign above it, I attempt to push it open to no avail. Fuck. I slam my shoulder into it, the sound echoing as I stand still and listen for a few seconds. Silence. That can be good if he’s far away, or bad because he’s finally realized to keep his stupid mouth closed.

I continue moving along the wall, passing near what appears to be a nurse’s station. The area is darker than most of the hallway due to lack of windows, making it more unnerving in the eerie silence.

Once I’m past it, the hallway keeps going for what feels like forever, but the windows turn into a view of a room that is open to several floors of the hospital, appearing to be the main lobby of the place. Continuing on, I find the elevators and finally stairs. Gripping the railing, I start my descent, the area barely lit.

I’m on the second-floor landing when a flash of light from the first floor catches my eye. Stooping down, I try to hide and get a decent view of what I thought I saw. Between my lack of vision from the dark and the grime in my eyes, anything is possible. There still feels like blood is seeping down my face, but it could be sweat. I don’t know. Either way, I rub the back of my hand over my forehead, then wipe it on my shorts. I could really use the shirt the motherfucker cut off me just to clean my face.

The staircase is fully enclosed, but there’s a pony wall overlooking the length of the main lobby. Everything is made of glass, some shattered, some not. But thankfully, most of it is covered in filth. Not good for seeing the jackass lurking around, but excellent for not being seen by him either. Finally, I get a view good enough to confirm it is a flashlight. He’s walking around the first level, shining the light over the area as he searches. Just before he moves it in my direction, I shift behind the staircase and hold my breath for a few seconds before slowly exhaling. Remaining still, I wait until there’s no sign of light in my direction then peek back around the corner. It looks like he’s still searching, so he doesn’t know where I am. Impatiently, I watch for a few minutes before he disappears down a darkened corridor. Then I move from my hiding place and descend the last flight of stairs.

The first step on the ground floor takes me by surprise. My foot sinks into about two inches of mud and slides across the slippery flooring beneath it, causing me to lose my balance and flop onto my ass in the damn slop. My hands are covered in sludge after automatically bracing for the fall. Slinging the mess off, I curse under my breath.

A beam of light catches my eye as I shuffle to get on my feet and scramble to the side of the stairwell for cover. Hiding again. Shit. It makes me feel weak and scared.

The light is getting closer. Son of a bitch. He probably heard me fall on my ass.

When the brightness of the flashlight grows close enough to where I think he’s actually on to me, I take off running. My feet slip and slide as I brace myself on the railing for some balance.
