Page 40 of Vicious Liar

Fuck. “Yep.”

“And she was located. Did you hear about it?” Coach says, a relaxed expression covering his face.

“Yes. Ryder said Morgan and Ava had gotten into it. Some girl drama or something.”

I stand and watch as he eyes me, his gaze trailing over me before he says, “Shut the door.”

“Excuse me?”

“You might want to shut the door. For your sake, not mine. Your choice.”

Something tells me to listen, so I do and push the door closed behind me and turn to face Coach. His expression now condescending as he continues, “See here’s the thing, I know my daughter is a liar. And now I know you’re one too.”

What the hell? “We both know Morgan is a handful.”

“Yes. We do.” Coach tilts his head to the side. “Have you heard from Lenny?”

Fuck. “No.”

“Neither has his dad. He called me this morning saying his son decided to skip town.” He raises his hands like he’s confused. “Kinda ironic since I saw him and his girlfriend with that handful of yours. The one you were looking for and just happened to turn up. And he hasn’t. Though Ava is still around apparently and had afightwith Morgan.”

“What did you just say?” I stare at him, asking the question I already know the answer to. I just can’t believe it. “You saw them take her.”

His eyes look away from me as he steps back but doesn’t deny it.

No. Fucking. Way.

He knew. And didn’t lift a finger to help. “You didn’t want her to be found. You hoped she wouldn’t come back.” I surge forward, grab his shirt, and slam him against the desk as his eyes stay locked with mine. “What the fuck is wrong with you? She’s your daughter!”

“And worth more to me dead.” He said it clearly, but I still can’t believe the words left his mouth.

My fingers tighten in the fabric as I slam him back again. “I swear to God if you even think about touching her, I will kill you.”

He gets a grin as he says, “I can’t do it myself. I would’ve already if I could. I’m not a murderer. But I figured if she didn’t come back, one less problem. But I wonder who in your little group is capable of such wrongdoing. Or was it Morgan herself? Did she kill Lenny? I know he’s dead. And I know one of you did it.”

The entire building feels like it’s coming down on me as I stand motionless. Coach calmly removes my hands from his shirt. “I don’t know all the details, but I know enough to make a shitstorm for you. So, here’s the arrangement. You’re playing. And winning. Every game. Your life, and theirs, depends on it.” He brings a hand up, patting me on the shoulder. “Harsh reality of life, but this is how shit gets done.” He walks away before turning a smile to me. “You know that. Your dad was in politics.”

I can’t even process anything he’s saying much less his joking playfulness. He’s calm because he has me right where he wants me. With no choice but to do as he wishes. But how do I agree to that?

If I play, I betray Morgan. If I don’t, I betray her and the others—Neil, Ryder, Savannah, even Ava. Everyone will suffer.

It doesn’t matter what I do.

I’m fucked. We’re all fucked. And now I finally see who created the Queen B. Coach fucking King himself.
