Fury rushes through me, and I shove him off me, using all the strength I have to separate our bodies. He looks confused, and I shake my head with a furious, mocking smile. I walk toward him with my finger pointed at him.

“You want to come back now?” I ask furiously. “Now that you know you have a child, you decide I’m worth something. Now that I’m a fucking incubation chamber, I matter, is that it?”

“No!” He looks appalled as he answers me. “Dana, no. I love you.”

I laugh loudly, turning away from him and rubbing my forehead. “You’re joking.” I turn around and throw my arms out to the sides. “Don’t you think it’s a little late to make that statement? If you love someone, you don’t treat them like shit!”

“Listen, please…”

“Get the fuck out of my house!” I scream, pointing to the door.

“No,” he shouts back as he takes me in his arms again.

I struggle, wiggling in his arms and trying to hit him with my hands. “Let go of me!”

“Listen,” he says gently.

“To what? What could you possibly have to say to make me believe your bullshit?”

“I loved another woman before you!”

I pause in my struggle. I know that tone in his voice; it only appears when he’s getting vulnerable. I don’t look at or hold him back, but I stop trying to resist as much as he continues speaking.

“Her name was Flora, and she was…” he sighs. “Amazing. We were together for years until she died. That’s why I came to Burning Sun because my old clan members murdered her.”

I slowly look up at him and meet his gaze. “What?” I ask, squinting my eyes and furrowing my brows.

“I thought she died because of me. I thought if I could have done something more or protected her more, she wouldn’t have died. I…” he pauses and shakes his head before looking back at me with tears in his eyes. “I thought if I loved you, something would happen to you, too, and I couldn’t live with that. I couldn’t…” He wipes a tear from his face and inhales deeply. “But I had already fallen in love with you. I still love you as much as I did the night at the river. It took me too long to realize I was a complete jackass.”

He releases me from his grip, and I look at him with sadness. Walking to the door, he holds his arms to the sides before dropping them by his hips.

“If you can’t forgive me, believe me, I understand.” He puts his hand on the door. “But I needed you to know that. I needed to at least try.” Pushing on the door, he begins to step outside.

I stare at him with my mouth hung open in awe. Before I can process what he’s said, I run to him and wrap my arms around his waist. He closes the door and turns around to hold me again, wrapping me tightly in his arms as I begin sobbing into his chest.

“Hey, hey…” he says gently. “Why are you crying?”

“Because I didn’t…know.” My sobs break up my words. “I didn’t know that’s what brought you here.” I lean my chin up to face him. “I can’t believe that’s what has held you back, Hurian; I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t apologize to me. I’m the one that owes you an apology every day for the rest of my life if you’ll have me.”

“Of course, I will.” I look deeply into his eyes and smile. “I love you, Hurian.”

“I love you too, Dana.”

He kisses me deeply, and I wrap my arms around him.God, I missed this, I think, as our lips part and our tongues play with each other. His arms tighten around me, and I melt into him just as I did the night we conceived our child.

HURIAN

Ican’t believe it; she forgives me,I think as I pull her close, locking my lips with hers like she’s water and I haven’t drank in three weeks. Her hand reaches up, and she places it on my cheek.

I fall deeper into her kiss, thinking about how much I missed her taste. I grab onto her waist hard, my fingers softly creating indents in her smooth skin as she kisses me harder. I walk forward, leading her deeper into the hut as our lips remain locked.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve wanted her again every night since we first made love. I didn’t ever think it consciously, out of fear that I would only be hurting her. That night at the river was the most intense and loving pleasure I’ve ever known.

I stop before we get to the bed, my fingers running over the nook of her neck softly. She smiles beneath our kiss and looks at me as she chuckles.
