Uneasiness tugs at my chest. He's playing me. He doesn't know what he thinks he does. “Him who?”

A trickle of laughter slips from him and he squeezes my shoulder. “If you aren't careful, no one will have to ask that question anymore. They will all know and will kill him while making you watch. Is that what you want?”

I bang my bionic hand so hard into the window I think the glass is gonna shatter. “There is no him. There is no one.”

He straightens himself in the seat, adjusting his jacket. “I hope for your sake you're telling the truth. I had someone hack your browser. I'm aware of the sites you've been on.”

Anger rises inside me like flames do when wood is added to a fire. “You've been spying on me? You fucking snake.”

He grabs me by the lapels of my coat. “You watch yourself, boy. I do it to keep you safe.”

“More like to protect your precious operation. You don't give a fuck about me,” I say, shoving him away.

“I didn't invite you in here to fight but it always leads to that anyway.” Something softens in his expression.

“Because you're insufferable,” I add, my pulse skyrocketing. Fuck this asshole and his little spies. I have to be more careful now. Even more so around my own father.

“Because I'm supposed to be the more mature one here, I'm going to let you have the last word.”

“In that case, you're an asshole.”

His body shakes from laughter but his eyes don't match the playful sound. “Feel better now?”

“No.” I place my elbow on the door, resting my chin on my closed fist. Glancing out the window, I lose myself in the moving trees for a little while.

“What's in Mexico anyway?” I ask, ending the uncomfortable silence, needing to distract myself from pulling a knife on the only parent I have left.

He relaxes into the seat. “A solution to one of our problems. A new supplier. From what I hear, his drugs are the best. We're going to test the quality and hopefully make a deal.”

I lift a brow. “Who's the guy?”

“Angel Castaneda.”

I’m shocked by what he says. “He's—”

“The main supplier for the Jeventinos,” he says, finishing my sentence.

“And you really think he'll sell to us?”

“We aren't in competition, so I don't see why not. The Jeventinos work strictly out of Mexico.” The confidence in his voice doesn't match the conflict in his eyes.

“Not all of them.” I've done some research on their whole family, curious to know who I'll have to go up against if I ever want to branch out in Mexico. These men are brutal when it comes to protecting what's theirs and they have connections all throughout Mexico and the US. It's not a fight I'd win. Not anytime soon at least.

He nods. “It's true. Miguel's son has started an operation out of Kansas City, but he has recently teamed up with his father. From what I hear, he'll be taking over for him soon with the help of his husband. Since Angel Castaneda is related by marriage, I was hoping to get on their good side. Earn their loyalty.”

“How the hell do we do that?” Loyalty always wins over anything else in this business, including fear of their own life. Earn someone's trust and you gain an ally. They can often be more reliable and dependable than friends. Its proximity isn't as limited as being afraid of someone. The further away you distance yourself from the thing you're scared of, the less power it holds over you.

“By finding out what they want and helping them get it. We scratch their back, they scratch ours.” Desperation causes his voice to shake the longer he talks. He can't afford for his plan to fail. Like most decisions we make, it's a gamble. It could go right or horribly wrong. There's no in between.

“What if your plan doesn't work?”

“It doesn't hurt to try. I've already gotten him to agree to meet with me when he's been turning other new distributors away. It's a good start.”

“What if he only agreed so they could kill us?”

“Trust me,mijo, they aren't that stupid. They run in big circles but so do we. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot by killing us. It wouldn’t go over very well. Also, we have a little thing called leverage. Fernando will be planting bombs outside a few of their business establishments and warehouses. They will only go off if need be. They hurt us, he hurts them right back. It won't end there either. I have information on their family, things they won't want getting out.”

“Bigger than you sleeping with your dead daughter's fiancé?” I arch a brow. “You aren't as careful as you think.”
