My chest heavily rises and falls. Feeling paralyzed, I stay where I am, allowing him to stroke my mouth and rub his nose against mine. Why can’t I move? He drags away his thumb and our lips are so close I can taste the lemon from his mouth. He’s been licking the batter and fuck is it making his mouth more temping. This is wrong. For more reasons than one.

Walk away. Push himback. Tell him to stop. Say you want him to.

I’d be lying. My body likes him exactly where he is. Finn’s lips brush over mine and I shudder. My mouth parts and his tongue darts forward. Before it can get too far, a knock at the door has him jumping back.

The pounding grows louder and doesn’t stop. Finn’s eyes round and he glances behind me before meeting my eyes again. “You expecting someone?”

I shake my head, still unable to find my words. I’m a mixture of emotions, and the current distraction isn’t enough to help me stop thinking about how soft Finn’s lips were or how his tongue was so close to touching mine.

I rush toward the door and when I pull it open, Isaac is standing on the porch holding a bag of takeout in his hand. “Hungry?”

My stomach knots. I should hug him and jump for joy. He saved me from making a huge mistake I wouldn’t have been able to take back. Yet all I feel is disappointment.

“A little. I didn’t know you were coming over. You should have told me. I’ve messaged you a few times today and you never answered.”

“I was caught up in work and then my phone died. I thought I’d surprise you.” He peers over my shoulder. “Do you have company over or something?”

“We were just making new stuff for the bakery tomorrow and were going to take a small break to have some ice cream,” Finn answers before I can.

“Is that so?” Isaac’s attention bounces between Finn and I. “Well, I only wanted to stop in for a little bit and maybe have dinner with my boyfriend, if that’s okay with you, kiddo. I haven’t seen much of him in the last two weeks.”

Which is fully his fault. He’s been giving me nothing but excuses every time I’ve tried to invite him over or to go see a movie with me. It sucks being the one to put all the effort into everything. “Finn was helping me so I didn’t have to be up all night baking. It’s way quicker with the two of us.”

“That’s cute. I’m sure his parents probably miss him though. He can always come back and help you later. I miss you, baby.” Isaac steps closer and presses a kiss to my lips. I stiffen, placing my hand to his chest.

“What, I can’t kiss you anymore?”

“You can as soon as we’re alone,” I say almost too quietly, nudging my head toward Finn.

“You act like the kid hasn’t seen his parents kiss before or something. I didn’t realize we had to be so damn PG around him. Isn’t he an adult now?” He squeezes between me and the door, forcing himself inside.

“It’s not about that, and he’s been an adult for a while now.” I follow Isaac toward the kitchen, and Finn doesn’t stay too far behind us.

“Could have fooled me.” He eyes Finn up and down, setting the food on the table.

“I should probably go eat myself. If you still need help, let me know,” Finn says, pausing on his way out, his eyes focusing on something on the entryway table.

“Will do, but I’m probably good for the night.”

His attention returns back to me and he nods. “See you later.”

My heart sinks at the way his face falls, the lightness in his eyes from before nowhere to be found.

“Bye, bye,” Isaac says, waving his hand in the air. “It’s probably close to your bedtime anyway.”

I shove at his shoulder and his laughter grows when the front door shuts so hard the pictures on the wall around it shake.

“He’s a sensitive one, huh?”

“No. You’re just a jerk.” I shove at him again and he tugs at my arm, pulling me against him.

“Ah, he knows I’m fucking with him.” He chuckles but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “Enough about that, though. How about you kiss me for real?”

Closing my eyes I press my lips to his and Finn flashes in my mind. As alarming as it should be, the memory of his smiles from today helps me settle easier against Isaac. The kiss is short and feels all wrong. Is it because I’ve gone so long without it?

I take a step back and stare at the table. “We should eat before the food gets cold.” The oven’s timer goes off and I rush toward it to pull out the cookies. I set them on the stove and turn off the oven. After placing the last no-bake cheesecake in the fridge, I sit at the table across from Isaac. He’s already in his chair, pulling out the containers of food.

“So, are we still going to the Pet Play by the Lake event?” he asks, removing the silverware from the plastic.
