He looks away before meeting my hard stare again. “Let’s just say he asked me to have a few drinks with him one day while you were napping and we did. He really shouldn’t have kept talking bad about you or looked away from his drink for so long, and they really shouldn’t sell laxatives at the front desk.”

Holding my hand over my mouth, I do my best to hide my laughter and fail miserably when I can’t stop myself from shaking. I really need to tell him he can’t do that again and scold him for it but I figure we have the whole plane ride for me to teach my Dom a lesson about risking getting us kicked out of the resort or worse.

My hand is already missing Theo’s and I hate how we had to break apart as soon as Zane dropped us off in front of my house. I still remember how Theo smiled at me as he walked in a different direction, my body screaming that he was going the wrong way.

My phone keeps dinging in my pocket as I enter the house, the message alerts echoing in the quiet, warm living room. It’s cold today and I’m glad I was wearing a somewhat thick jacket and beanie. Pulling off my hat, I shove it in my pocket and take my phone out. Zane’s name is lighting up the screen. We were with him in the car only seconds ago. What could he possibly need so badly he has to blow my phone up like a needy ex?

“Hello?” I answer, my voice a little too loud.

“Dude. Why aren’t you answering your phone?” Zane’s voice is frantic.

“What’s going on?”

“Have you gone inside your house yet?” he asks, the worry in his voice not lessening.

“Yeah, why?”

“Because, cabron. They know.” He breathes loudly into the phone the way he does when he’s pacing a room.

My fingers tighten around my phone and I stop moving toward the kitchen. “What do you mean? Who knows?”

“Your mom and dad. Check your damn social media. That asshole Isaac splattered your pics all over the place and tagged you both.”

My heart drops in my stomach as I collapse into the soft cushions of the couch, my body unable to relax against them. “Let me call you back.”

Switching the screen over, I check over my two social media apps and my eyes freeze on the screen when I see I have over fifty notifications. What the fuck? I click on a tag from Isaac and the whole room closes in on me. I zoom in on the picture of me kissing Theo in his dove gear. No, no, no. They weren’t supposed to find out this way. Instead of making Isaac shit his brains out for a day or two, I should have snapped his fucking neck.

I toss my phone on the cushions, shoving my face in my hands. Fuck, fuck, fuck. My head lifts when I think about what Theo must be going through. Surely he knows by now. My head spins as I stand up from the couch and I grab my phone to shove it in my pocket. What if my parents haven’t seen it? They don’t check social media that often.

“So is it true?” my mom asks, leaning over the sink as I enter the kitchen.

“Is what true?” I walk closer, wondering if it’s safe to meet her eyes right now. I’m not sure I’ll be able to handle the anger or disappointment I might find there. I’ve gotten enough from my bio dad. I don’t need it from her too.

“I think you know what I’m referring to.”

“Look, Ma—”

She quickly turns around, her eyes softer than I expected. Her expression is filled with worry more than anything else. “Just answer me one thing. Has your relationship been legal this whole time?”

My heart stammers. “Yes, Ma. Of course it has. Theo isn’t the bad guy here. I am. We only got together recently, and he tried to end it before it could start but I wouldn’t let him.”

“Tu?” Her eyes widen.

“Si, Ma. Me. I think I’m in love with him.” I breathe out a sigh, running my hand through my hair. “Actually, I know I am. You know how persistent I can be when I want something enough.”

An awkward chuckle escapes her. “I do. You’ve been that way since you were a small child.” She fumbles with her apron, stepping closer to me to grab my hand. “Does he love you?”

“I…” My throat tightens at the unexpected question. “I think so. At least it feels like it’s mutual.”

She nods, her smile comforting. “Look, you two are both adults and as far as I know are able to make your own decisions. Will some people see it as wrong? Maybe, but you can’t always choose who you love, and if he makes you happy then who am I to stand in the way?”

A heavy relief falls over me and I squeeze her hands. “I thought you’d give me more trouble than this.”

“I might have if I hadn’t already questioned it many times before.”
