“I… Zane said you were at the gym and I went there but—”
“I was but left when I got your last message. I wanted to give you space at first and then I was angry with you for shutting me out.”
“And now?” I step closer, sucking my bottom lip between my teeth.
“Now I just really fucking miss you.” He cups my face with his hands. I’d forgotten how good it feels when he touches me. The memories and dreams don’t compare.
“I miss you too, and I’m sorry for pushing you away. I wasn’t thinking straight and everything became too much so fast that I… I—”
“Shhh. Easy. I know, baby. I know. I should have waited or begged for you to open the door some more. I left too easily. I realized it after a few days of sleeping on Zane’s awful couch.” He wrinkles his face as if he’s reliving the experience all over again.
Resting my hands on his hips, I tug him closer to me. I desperately need to fill the space between us. “I hope you’ll choose to stay with me instead tonight then.”
“Do you want me to?” His chest heavily rises and falls.
“Yes. And tomorrow and the next.”
“What about the day after that?” His nose presses to mine, his mouth so close I’m tempted to shove my tongue inside.
I nod. “And every day after. I’m yours, right?”
His forehead rubs against mine. “Siand I’m yours.”
“I love you,” I whisper, keeping our bodies pressed together and not caring about the water running cold.
“Yo también te amo.”
Our lips crash together, the heat of our kisses overpowering the cold room and shower. To think I was so close to throwing this all away. I’ll never make the mistake again. Why cook, shower, and sleep alone in my house when I can have someone as wonderful as Finn to randomly invade all my spaces?
The day started off perfectly, with me waking up in Finn’s arms and him making meatolefor breakfast. We both went to work and agreed to join his parents for dinner. Lydia insisted we come together and not be late. She can be a scary woman when you get on her bad side.
“You ready, love bird?” he asks, sticking out his arm for me to grab.
“I am. Let’s get this awkward family dinner over with.” I hook my arm in his and we walk down the sidewalk leading to his parents’ house.
“The first of many.”
The front door pulls open before we can reach the porch and Lydia is full of smiles, wearing a red dress.
“Hola. You both made it.”
“We did,” I say, quickly moving to hug her. Finn greets his mom after me, and I don’t expect my brother to be standing in the living room as we walk inside.
“Hey, Ben.”
He rushes toward me and pulls me into a hug. I relax against him once I realize he wasn’t coming over to punch me in the face. I wrap my arms around him, exhaling a breath. “I’m sorry you found out that way.” It was my only regret. “We wanted to tell you on our own time,” I continue.
“I’m sorry I reacted the way I did without hearing you two out first. I’m still not sure how I feel about you being together but it really doesn’t matter what I think.” He releases me, taking a step back, and his gaze drifts between me and Finn. “Finn is right. You are both adults, and if you truly want to be together then I won’t stand in your way.”
“Good. Can we eat now? Because I’m fucking starving and all this apologizing is ruining my appetite.”
The room erupts in laughter. Leave it to Finn to lighten the mood at the right moment.
“Si, mijo,” Lydia says, pushing Finn toward the kitchen. “Since you’ve been gone for almost a week there was plenty of food in the freezer to cook tonight.”
She and Finn continue to banter back and forth, lessening the tension in the room. We all sit at the table, passing around food and sharing laughs. Finn scoots his chair closer to mine, linking our ankles together, and everything feels exactly how it should again. Benjamin shifts in his chair, unable to look our way for too long. He isn’t fully comfortable seeing us together yet but at least he’s trying to still be here for us. The rest will come with time. Having dinner together is a great start and so is being able to hold Finn’s hand whenever I want.
