He pounced at me, and my heart stopped.

He knocked me to the ground and began punching relentlessly, his fists strong and trained. Pain throbbed across my body, but I couldn't fight back. My body wouldn't let me. He sat astride me, his rage palpable, as he attacked me, but I couldn't help but stare in admiration, in lust.

Meeting him, seeing him look at me, was all it took for me to realize what I'd been missing, and all the feelings I thought I needed with Clawdia alone, I found with him here.

They really were my soul mates—both, together as one.

And he was going to kill me.

As though through a fog, I heard Clawdia shout, "Zaide, stop!"

CHAPTER19

ZAIDE

Igasped heaving breaths as I stumbled to my feet and backed away from the akari I’d just attacked. My hands shook from the horror at my actions.

"I-I-I …" I stammered, unable to form words as remorse took over my senses. He looked dreadful. Prone and unmoving.

Have I killed him?

"Baelen!" Clawdia's voice rang out, and I looked around to see her drop to the ground next to the bloody mess I'd created. She ran her hands over his body, checking for the most serious injury, and I didn't react. I took big gulping breaths and tried to calm the loud heartbeat echoing in my ears.

It was then that I realized what she had said. Baelen. The son of my gods. The one who was responsible for teaching us. The akari who kissed my soul pair.

What have I done?

A small part of me was glad. He’d kissed Clawdia after our first time together and ruined the morning after. But he definitely didn't deserve such a beating over a kiss. Especially not a beating that had been directed at the tyrant of an evil memory.

I dropped to my knees and touched him, intending to help Clawdia heal him, but froze suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. Connection. Something … changed between us when I placed one hand on Baelen’s skin and the other on Clawdia’s. We seemed to simultaneously suck in a breath.

The air around us was charged, electric. Our hearts beat as one. And despite my shock and fear, desire rumbled through my body like a storm streaking directly to my cock like a bolt of lightning, turning it into a hard rod straining against my trousers.

As quickly as I touched him, I let him go and saw Clawdia do the same. I looked up to see that she had healed him already, and although the blood remained, crusting as it dried, it didn't detract from his beauty. He had dark skin that looked smooth and soft and equally dark hair that had a slight curl to it. I imagined it was coarse to the touch. His straight nose pointed to full lips surrounded by a stubbly beard that highlighted his sharp cheekbones.

He is beautiful.

I couldn't recall ever being so interested in the facial features of a man before … although I also hadn’t been interested in the facial features of a woman until I met Clawdia.

"What just happened?" I asked shakily.

"I don't know," Clawdia replied with a blush staining her cheeks that told me she was just as affected as I was. A heavy sigh came from the body at our side. We turned our attention to him as he threw an arm over his eyes and sighed again.

"Baelen?" Clawdia asked. "Are you okay?"

He mumbled something neither of us could decipher. She picked up his arm to look at his face. His eyes opened. Red. Akari red. I swallowed and closed my eyes for a moment. I tried to push all the fear and memories involving red eyes out of me. I calmed my breathing and listed things about red eyes that I could learn to appreciate:

1. They are unique.

2. They are the color of … passion and love.

3. They can be fearsome, which is good for enemies.

4. They can see in the dark, which is very useful.

When I couldn't think of anything else, I opened my eyes to see Clawdia and Baelen staring at me. Recalling the nice things about red eyes made them not so terrifying to look at. He hadn’t quite sat up fully yet, instead he leaned on his forearms with Clawdia sitting behind him.

"Zaide, are you all right?" she asked.
