And Tacey flicked on the light.

FIFTEEN

Tacey blinked. First, she wondered how Callie had managed to get her naked gargoyle statue up here. Second, she wondered why. Then she took in the image of her daughter hugging the statue's ankles and wondered if she could get the girl out of there before she looked up and saw the gargoyle's massive package.

If anything, it was even bigger than she remembered.

"Come on, Rory, it's time to go home," Tacey said, holding out her hand to help her up.

Rory only wrapped her arms tighter around the statue's ankles. "Not without Mr Monster Protector. He's here to protect me!"

Tacey sighed. Of course Rory would take a liking to the naked statue. When Callie got back, Tacey was going to kick her arse into next week.

"I can't carry him down the stairs, sweetheart. We'll have to come back for him later, when we can find someone strong enough to help move him." Move him to somewhere Rory wouldn't find him.

"Don't be silly. He can walk, Mummy!"

Tacey took a deep breath. "Rory, statues can't..."

"And he can talk, too! He's a not a statue, he's a..." Rory squinted up at the statue. "Mr Monster, what kind of monster are you?"

One more second and she was going to see his package and start asking other questions Tacey wasn't sure she wanted to answer yet.

"I'm a gargoyle, Miss Rory, and my name is Wystan Steel."

It moved. The statue actually moved. Or maybe Matt was right and she was delusional, and...

Tacey swore.

"Language, Mummy!"

Fuck.

The man in the suit. He was just a man in a suit. Matt must have seen Rochelle or Octavia talking to him, and thought...

Well, that explained the impressive package. It had to be fake, too. Made of the same rubbery plastic as Callie's statue.

Tacey reached out to give it a squeeze.

It didn't feel like rubber at all. It was warm and hard and soft all at the same time, like steel wrapped in silk. Like a man's actual...

Tacey swore again and released the man's...member. She'd never seen a dick that big before. How could she possibly have thought it was real?

She bit her lip, trying and failing to meet the man's eyes. Of course, he was covered in makeup and costume and he looked like a statue, but she still knew he was a man under all that and she'd just grabbed his dick and given it a good squeeze. "Sorry." It came out like the squeak of a dying mouse.

His mouth opened, then closed again, without any words coming out. The man marched up to the wall and just sort of...disappeared.

Leaving Tacey and Rory staring after him.

Rory, of course, recovered first. "You scared him away, Mummy! He promised to protect me!" she wailed.

"I'll protect you, sweetheart. That's what mummies do," Tacey said absently. She didn't know how she'd do it yet, but she knew she'd do anything to protect Rory from Matt. He wasn't having her, not while Tacey still drew breath. She'd fight him every step of the way.

As for whatever she'd just seen...she intended to do her best to forget it, and make sure Rory did, too. She had enough to deal with, just with Matt.

SIXTEEN

When they got home, Rory insisted she wanted to watch TV, and Tacey was too distracted to say no. Her mind was full of dread and possible solutions, each crazier than the last. Moving somewhere else was out of the question, what with the borders closed and all her family and friends were here. Besides, even if she did go somewhere else, Matt had the money to hire someone to hunt her down.
