“Good,” he replied. I was confused at what he was appeased about, until he explained. “We can’t have any witnesses.”

“No,” I trembled. I wanted a witness badly. I wanted someone to just pop up, but as I entered the car, I saw no one. The man smiled at me, as tears came down my cheeks.

“What do you want?” I asked. The man said nothing, and he took my hands roughly. He pulled a string out of his pocket. Then he looked me in the eye, his facial expression one of annoyance.

“Shut up,” he said. Then he wrapped the string around my hands. He wasn’t gentle, but he wasn’t overly rough either. Why would anyone want to kidnap me?

“Shouldn’t you gag me?” I asked him. I had seen this before, mostly in the movies, but my dad talked about kidnapping people all the time. The man struck me in the face with his hand.

“Didn’t you hear me? I told you to shut up. The next time you talk, I’m taping your mouth shut,” he insisted.

I got quiet then thought for a moment.Does this man want me on the phone with my dad?

Surely enough, once the strings were tied, he got on his phone.

“Hey,” he said, turned away from me. “I have the little bitch, what do you want me to do with her?” The person on the other line didn’t say much, because the man simply nodded. “Got it, boss,” was all he said.

He got into the car, the click of his seat belt locking up my fate. I couldn’t believe this was happening. If only Brody were around.

I thought about shrieking, but I didn’t want the man to strike me again.

We drove off, and when we did, I began accepting my fate. That’s when the divine intervened, and a car T-boned into us at the next intersection. It had come from nowhere, but the man in the front seat had been hit.

It was almost as if whoever was in the car had timed it just right.

BRODY

Igot out of the car, my heart in my throat, the very real fear that I could have hurt Adriana on my mind.It was the only way, you couldn’t let him take her- they wanted her alive to torture her.I knew that Frank had many enemies, and it didn’t take a detective to know that hurting his family was a bigger power move than if they had killed his men.

I suspected I knew who it was, but with the intricacies of dealing with so many different mobsters, I had to be absolutely confident I knew who it was. And I had to know why they did it, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to make the right move.

Everything in love and war is about the right move.

But it didn’t matter. The good news was that Adriana was unscathed- I feared that more than anything. I cared too much about this woman- the girl who could wrap me around her finger was, for once, a damsel in distress.

Quickly, I opened the door to the backseat, and got her untied. I could sense that she was calm, despite what just happened. The true mark of a mafia lord’s family is how they handle these situations.

What really struck me is how cool she was after I had freed her up. Adriana gave me a quick kiss on the cheek, and then said, “I’m glad it was you. You could have missed though.”

“I never miss.” In reality, I was terrified that I could have missed, and Adriana could see right through me.

“You’re going to have to explain this to my dad,” she said. “We could hide this whole thing from him, but he needs to know something happened to me.”

What she left unspoken was that she and I had just been together. She was in trouble because of me, or at least, because she had gone to see me.

She must have sensed my guilt because she calmly said as we walked along the streets, “It was my choice to be with you.”

I didn’t know what to say, so we just kept walking. My car was totaled, but I had everything I needed at my disposal. I called for a driver, and within a few minutes, one of them picked us up.

Adriana wasn’t the overly spoiled mob boss's daughter.No.She simply accepted that we would have to ride in a less comfortable vehicle- the driver who picked us up was in a very small Toyota. I had just wrecked my Benz to be downgraded to this, and she still wanted to be with me.

We sat in silence as the driver took us back to Frank’s safe house.

When we pulled up, I saw Frank’s bulky figure.

“It’s my fault something happened,” I said. I didn’t care that Frank would be angry, I just wanted to make sure he knew what was going on.
