Adriana looked at me with wide eyes. “You’re going to tell him that?”

I got out of the small car. “Yes.”

“You’re crazy,” she said. “He only needs to know someone attacked me. Maybe we don’t tell him everything.”

I agreed, but there was simply too much going on in my mind for me to make a sharp decision. I headed towards Frank who gave me a harsh look.

“You taking my daughter in the middle of the night?” Frank asked. “I oughtta have you killed, but you make me too much money. Maybe that’s the problem.”

“Your daughter—“ I started, but Frank wasn’t having any kind of explanation from me.

“My daughter stays the hell away from you, and you keep it locked in,” Frank said pointing with his gun. “Or…” he waved his gun, “…you know…”

“Someone tried to attack her,” I said.

Frank shook his head.

“Daddy, it’s true,” Adriana said, trying to soften him up for me. “They kidnapped me and Brody rescued me.”

Frank grunted. “I know what I see. I know what my guards tell me. You snuck out.”

Then Frank turned to me.

“I found out who let her sneak past him,” Frank said, a sinister look in his eye. “Brody, you’ve been my friend for years, and I owe you this much, but you need to get my message through your head.”

I had known Frank for long, so I knew that I wasn’t looking forward to the next few minutes.I just felt bad for the man he’d use to send me the message.

Frank called back into his house. “Jared, come out here,” he shouted.

“Don’t do this,” I said. I couldn’t have an innocent man’s blood on my head.

“Do what?” Adriana asked. “Daddy?”

I couldn’t stand the fact that Frank was going to make his own daughter watch him murder one of his own just to make a point. “Go back inside,” I said, but like the stubborn beauty that she was, she didn’t budge.

Coldly, Frank’s voice reminded me of the countless murders I’d had to witness over the years. I couldn’t forget them, not even if I tried.

“Sweetie, go inside,” Frank said. Jared came out, a young guard, probably around Adriana’s age. I wondered if she had persuaded him to let her sneak out.

She remained quiet. “No,” she finally said.

“GO INSIDE!” Frank waved his gun.

“No,” she said again.

“I can take her inside,” Jared said. He started to take Adriana, but Frank stopped him.

“Don’t you dare,” Frank said, his gravelly voice low and menacing.

“Jared, why don’t you come with me?” I said, but the dumb boy remained at Frank’s side.

The air was frozen still, and Adriana stood there, her eyes shifting between glances at me and then Jared. She knew what was going to happen.

“You don’t want to see this,” I said to her, but Adriana stood there dumbly.

Frank, to his credit, still wanted to protect his daughter.

“This is between Brody and me,” Frank said, turning to her. “You go inside, play some loud music, whatever you gotta do to forget about him. Jared, would you mind staying out here? I need you to help me send a message to Brody.”
