Reluctantly,she went inside.

“You don’t want to do this,” I said to Frank. I could feel the hairs standing up in the back of my neck when he gazed at me, blood-red eyes. And the young man was just standing there.

“Jared,” Frank said. “You let Adriana get away.”

“Sir?” Jared said.

“You think I pay you to let her sneak off in the middle of the night?”

I almost intervened, but Frank waved his gun at Jared.

“Get on your knees, Jared,” he said, the gun aimed at Jared’s shoulder. Frank wasn’t the kind of killer who liked a clean shot. No, he preferred it long and drawn out. I had almost forgotten what a sadistic son-of-a-bitch he was. This was going to be slow. Painfully slow.

“And you!” Frank said to me. “You really think your money, your business, can buy my loyalty and friendship? And then you have the audacity to think you can just have my daughter.”

“It’s not what it looks like!” I said. Jared was sobbing, and I could hear the faint sounds of music from inside the house.Adriana knows. She’s probably seen him do this before.

The thought made me sick, but worse was the fact that this kid didn’t stand a chance. The poor sucker had just been a guard at the wrong time, and Frank was the kind of boss who didn’t tolerate investigations. Now, the kid would die, and I would have to watch.

“I protected Adriana!” I said, hoping to God that Frank would forgive Jared, and let things go. Of course, he was never the type to do that, and when he got really quiet like he was thinking, I knew that things had gone from bad to worse.

“You hear that, Jared,” Frank said. “Brody over there says that you failed to do your job so that he had to. And what did I tell you about my little Adriana?”

“She’s not that little!” Jared said, rather stupidly. I don’t know what it is about people who are begging for their lives, but they never said the right thing. They never could.

Swiftly, Frank punched Jared with the butt of his gun. The young man’s face was bleeding, and I decided I didn’t want to watch the kid. So I walked away.

“What are you doing?” Frank asked. He then came down the steps with the young man by the scruff of the neck, while I tried to walk away. Anywhere was better than here right now.

“So that’s how you wanna be? Huh? A coward!?” Frank said.

“Knock it off,” I said, walking away, but Frank managed to grab me by the hand.

This time I swung at him, and he caught my fist.

His grip was tight, and I breathed deeply. “Frank,” I said. “Let the kid go.”

“Yes, please,” Jared begged, sobbing relentlessly.

“Pathetic,” Frank muttered.

The young man was useless against the brute strength of Adriana’s father. They didn’t call him the boss for nothing. I knew that being Frank’s friend would protect me from his wrath, but when it came to matters of his forbidden daughter, all bets were off.

“You’re lucky,” Frank said to me, nodding his head. “It could have been you.”

Everything happened slowly even though it was just a split second. The loud fire of the gun echoed as I saw the young man’s brains being shot out of him. At least, it was a quick death. Jared’s body collapsed, and I stood watching in horror.

Frank didn’t smile, he simply walked away.

As he was leaving, I could hear him telling me something.

“If you ever bother to mess with me again,” Frank said, his voice fading. “It’ll be you. Don’t even think about making me money. I want nothing to do with you. You touch her, and I promise. It’lll be you. You’ll be begging for your life, just like the kid was.”

“What are you going to do without me?” I asked. I had positioned myself beautifully in the King’s mafia, so much so that my absence would mean a crumbling infrastructure for their assets.

“I don’t need you,” he said. “Business will go on as usual.”

I sighed a breath of relief, as his words meant that he wasn’t completely ousting me from his mafia. It meant he at least wouldn’t put out a hit on me. I needed to live if I was still going to see his beautiful daughter.
