We were just getting started.

Wasn’t it just the best?

But still, he left me with nothing.

One of the guards knocked on the door. I quickly got changed before he could come in. A burly man that was shorter than me trudged into the room.

“Your father says he needs to see you,” the man said.

“I want nothing to do with him,” I said. “I’m staying in here.”

And here I was, locked up in a prison both physical and of my own mind. Brody didn’t love me, I was rejected, and my father was being a pain in the ass. His guard left, and came back, telling me that I would be locked up in here, until I spoke with father.

What was worse was the fact that I started feeling really sick the next morning. A brief thought of possibly carrying Brody’s child crossed my mind, but I couldn’t just go to the doctor, I had to find out another way.

But first, I have to tell Daddy what I really think. No man, not even my dangerously, overprotective violent father could tell me what to do.

BRODY

“Who’s that?” My driver was a kid named Chris, and I had made the mistake of keeping my guard down. Adriana had texted me, and the kid was a little too curious. He had my phone in his hand.

“No one,” I said, snatching back my phone. Not that Adriana was no one, I just didn’t want Chris digging any further into it.

“Sorry boss,” Chris said. Of course, he wasn’t that sorry, Adriana’s first pic was pretty risqué, and I know what he was thinking.

“Yes, it really is Frank King’s daughter,” I said.

“How did you land that one?”

“I didn’t,” I said, shrugging off his questions. “We’re not together.”

“But you could be!”

Damn kids get on my nerves, which was what made Adriana so special to me. She wasn’t like the other 20 somethings who just cared about themselves. No, she was smart. When she wasn’t being rash and in love.

I had to leave her. There was no other choice.

If I kept things going, she would get someone else killed. She already had.

“Come on, kid,” I said. “Let’s get going.” Today was going to be a busy day, I had all sorts of meetings and I needed a good getaway driver. Chris had come to me on a very high recommendation. The problem was that the best drivers were also young men who took too many risks. Perfect for where we were going to go, not so good for keeping him away from my cell phone.

“And if you ever touch that phone again,” I said.

Chris nodded. “So, where to?

“West Garfield Park,” I said. Most people flinched a little when I told them we were going there, but a driver in the mob? I mean, I wasn’t exactly mob, but if your money’s tied up with them…

Chris started driving. He was acting as if we were on a Sunday stroll. “So, how’s Mr. King?”

I knew that Chris just wanted to know how Mr. King’s daughter was, but I wasn’t ready to think about her again. I still had to deal with all of her father’s business. Even if he didn’t want anything to do with me, I had to be the bigger person.

“Right now, I’m just ready to get things squared away with the Reed Mafia,” I said. The Reed Mafia was more of a nuisance and not as violent as the Kings were. Dangerous, but money was always the best way to silence them. At least, I hoped.

Chris snorted. “Don’t worry, I got you boss.” The last guy who had anything to do with me tangentially was killed by Frank. I still thought about that poor kid. Jared was his name?

We drove in silence after that- Chris must have noticed that I wasn’t in a mood to talk. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out my mood. I was still reeling from the fact that I had had to break up with Adriana. I felt this void, and kept telling myself it was the best thing I could do.
