I stayed quiet, and Marion opened his big mouth again.

“I was hoping you could tell us about his daughter,” Marion said.

“What about her?” I asked. Inwardly, I was pissed. They didn’t dare do a thing to her.Lay one finger on her, and you’ll see what I can do.

Marion snorted. “Dead end. You don’t know either. Some guy just killed our man who tried to kidnap her. The bitch got away.”

I had to be careful. As angry as I was - the red hot fire within me was ready to burst into flames - I couldn’t just act on my emotions. I couldn’t even show them.

“Got away?” I had to pretend I didn’t know. I had to pretend that I wasn’t the one who had saved Adriana. The things I do for love…and then some.

Marion shrugged. He was a big dumb brute, and that’s all he would ever be. My guess was that his father was behind all of it. Adriana was a chess piece to them, and my heart was right in the middle of it all.

After more silence from me, a power move I learned that made others feel uncomfortable, Marion started blabbing. He told me as much as he could, which wasn’t much at all.

In a nutshell, his father was upset with the King mafia, and he wanted revenge.

I had to tread very carefully. As much as I didn’t want them treating Adriana like she was just an object to be played with, I also had to be careful that they didn’t suspect I cared for her.

They couldn’t have even seen me with her, right?

No. I was too careful.

Still, I had to be careful of who I was double crossing. I didn’t like doing any of that, but it was part of the game you played when you dealt with lots and lots of money, and teamsters.

Finally, after a long, uncomfortable silence, Marion stood up. “Does Frank know about us taking his daughter?”

“No,” I said, though I wasn’t sure. But between Frank being overly protective of his daughter and his incredible jealousy of me, I’d say the Reeds were safe from any kind of retaliation from him at the moment.

Marion nodded approvingly. “Good. We don’t need him on our tails. It’s already hard enough as it is without having to fund a full on war against him. We just can’t let him keep taking our money.”

I shrugged. “Do you need more?” I asked. Usually, whenever serious problems arose, money was always the answer. Taking care of the Reeds was easy for me, and the Kings mafia didn’t really “war” with anyone. No, they just stepped and crush whoever was in their way.

I made a mental note to talk to Carlo some more about the Kings and the Reeds. I didn’t want to mix too much of my business with them, but—it happened naturally. One supplier dealt with another, one dealer relied on another…the whole supply chain infrastructure was an entire cluster that I had to keep in order.

If only Adriana could help me.The girl was brilliant. I was in love with her beautiful mind, and only lust got in the way.Was I her first?

The thought was tantalizing, but I had to brush it off my mind. There were important things to deal with, including formulating a plan.

Seems like offering more funds to Marion did the trick, as he appeared to relax a bit.

“I’d recommend waitingsome before attempting something else against Frank, otherwise he’ll figure out quickly who was behind his daughter’s attempted kidnapping.”

“Yeah, maybe, I’ll have to think about it”, Marion said. By which he meant he’d have to discuss with his father, of course.

I thanked Marion as I left the compound, and he thanked me back.

Even mobsters are polite when they think you have their best interests in mind.

“All good, boss?” Chris asked.

“Shut up and drive, kid,” I said.

The only thing that was on my mind was how to get Adriana back. There was no way around it, I needed her. But her father, he was trouble. I ran over dozens of scenarios, and none of them felt right.

I almost made a call to Carlo, but I knew that he was the in-person kind of talker. He wouldn’t mess around, and if I asked him to, he would do pretty much anything for me.

Chris dropped me off at my mansion after a short, yet silent car ride.
