There were a few chances for me to go to one of the service areas, but I decided not to make that decision until I got to the last area. With the tunnel being underground, I had to go by various landmarks to help me know when I was getting to the last door before I got to the outer perimeter.

The outer perimeter consisted of a tall, bordered rampart, that outlined the safe prison my father had made for when he was in danger. There was one service area just before the wall, but I risked one of his guards seeing me.

Still, I had to take the chance because there were two bikes and a stockade of guns I needed that would help me in case of an attack. I made my way to the service door, and pulled.

It wouldn’t budge.

Do I go back or keep trying? The area right before this one would probably have some things I could use, though I wasn’t sure. There were always deliveries here- when it wasn’t being used as a safe zone to hide, the compound was a place where father kept his most prized assets. He never told me specifically what he had, but when I got to the door, I heard the sound of men on the other side.

Great! What now?

I listened in on them.

“That daughter of the King is really something,” one of the guards was saying. “She even took down that Mr. Whitlock.” It was strange to hear Brody being called Mr. Whitlock, but I knew they meant him.He shouldn’t have dumped me, but I guess, with everything going on, I can’t blame him.

It was sweet that he wanted to keep me safe. But I was tired of men telling me what to do, how to live, and how to be. They didn’t need to decide for me, and I was going to let Brody know that. If he really didn’t want to be with me, that would be one thing, but I didn’t think he dumped me because he didn’t care.

The guards continued talking on the other side of the door. My ear was pressed against it, when I felt the door move. Walking in the direction the door went, I hoped the guards wouldn’t see me as they came into the underground pathway.

“I’ve never seen this,” muttered the guard on the other side of the door. I tried to keep my breathing to a minimum. I didn’t want to be heard or discovered. My heart was still, and I kept my eyes open despite the powerful urge to close them.

This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening…

“Yeah would you shut that would ya?” Another guard said. “You know the boss doesn’t want anyone going through that tunnel.”

The door closed. I was safe.

What did he mean that he didn’t want anyone going through the tunnel? Why?

I tried to listen for the guards voices but they soon faded away. When it had been long enough, I slightly opened the door, tiptoeing past the exit, looking around very carefully.

There was no one around. At least, not in sight.

Ahead of me, there were barrels everywhere. I couldn’t blend in very well- there were no female guards, so I stood out like a sore thumb. Even my clothes, which I had chosen carefully: military green shorts, a comfy white t and a black baseball cap would make me instantly recognizable to anyone who was looking for me.

A few of the guards had girlfriends, but they weren’t allowed during one of my father’s showdowns. Something told me that’s what was about to happen, but father had been very vague about the danger we were in.

For all I know, this could just be one of those foolish scares of his. Still, better safe than sorry.

I looked around for anything that could help, and I saw the keys to a truck. If I steal that now, I might be ok getting out of here.I went for it, taking the keys and then locating it.

There was only one truck, and it had been perfectly parked. I got in and started driving. The second you hear anyone shouting that someone stole a truck, you hoof it.But those thoughts were simply paranoid ones - all I had to do was act as if I belonged driving the truck.

I put my pony tail up in my hat so that I wouldn’t be recognized as a girl at first sight, and it worked when I drove past a pair of guards chatting it up. They held their weapons as if preparing for a fight, but their body language was relaxed.

Yup, even his men believe he’s probably overacting.

I made my way past the gate, and the ease with which I got out disappointed me.Daddy needs new and better guards. If Brody were in charge, he’d probably have picked better men. If I were in charge, I’d have picked better men.

Focus, Adriana!

The truck drove the paved road leading away from the compound. I was a sitting duck for anyone who noticed me, and I wasn’t going to let myself get trapped by anyone.

I floored the pedal and soon the compound was disappearing in my rearview mirror, as I headed toward the city. However, I noticed something strange right before I got on the highway. There was a row of ten black cars congregating right before the entrance ramp.

As I shot on the ramp heading towards downtown, two of the cars got right behind me.

I can outdrive them if I have to.
