“In due time, my sweet Adriana,” he said, and I could see the reassuring expression on his face that meant things would be ok.I was confused though. Why was he here? What’s going to become of my father?

I worried the most about my him. My thoughts went to that caravan of cars and the signs weren’t good. Most likely, the other people in the caravan were going to do something to my father.

I looked at Brody with pleading eyes as he began to explain everything to me.

BRODY

It killed me that Reed’s men had shot at her, but I had to take things one at a time. We didn’t know who was in the truck, only that someone within Frank’s compound was planning on killing him.

I tried to find the right words to explain to Adriana.

“What are you doing here?” She asked, upset with what looked like my presence to kill her father. I was on the opposing side for all she knew, but it was much more convoluted than that.

“Adriana,” I said. “This is Braden Reed.”

A tall man with blonde hair waved at her. “Frank’s daughter is beautiful. No wonder he didn’t want her with you.”

She rolled her eyes. “I can be with whoever I want.”

It was cute that she had this fire in her, this way of saying that she was in charge. Even when she was clearly not.

“Braden Reed isn’t my father’s friend,” Adriana said, slowly coming to the realization that I was in fact here to kill her father. At least, that’s what it was looking like.

“We came to an agreement of sorts,” I said.

“What kind of agreement?” She asked. The look of concern on her face told me everything about how she felt towards her father. The Reeds were right. This was a tough situation.

“You’re going to kill my father?” She asked.

“We can’t tell you everything,” I said. “But your father’s men are all about to die.”

“That’s preposterous!” Adriana didn’t believe us, and her face was growing red. “My father’s compound is secure.”

“It’s not,” Braden said. “And…”

“Why is he talking?” Adriana asked. She looked like a tiger getting ready to pounce when Braden spoke. He wasn’t the kind of man to flinch, and just put a hand out.

“Relax,” I said. “You’re father’s going to live. We’re there to kill the mole.”

“The mole?”

“Like I said, we can’t tell you everything because…” I shrugged.

“Because you don’t know?!” Adriana didn’t like that. I didn’t like it either, but when I had started talking to the Reeds, I had gained new info on Frank’s enemies. Including them, though they kept a lot of their information close to the chest.

“He doesn’t know what we don’t tell him,” Braden said. “Your boyfriend is a good guy. A lot better of a man than your father. None of us would be in this mess if it wasn’t for him.”

Adriana tried to talk, but the words weren’t forming.

I put my hand on her shoulder. She was a head’s length shorter than me, and I looked down on her with my most caring eyes. Tears formed in her eyes.

“Adriana, it’s the best I could do,” I said.

Braden spoke up. “Listen to him, your father’s crazy. Half of my men want him dead, and the other half….they won’t do anything to stop that. And we aren’t the only ones pissed at him.”

“I can’t guarantee your father will live,” I said. “I paid off Reed’s men, but…”
