Without much of a hurry, I walked to the living room and found my pants discarded on one of the lamps.Boy was this one a wild one…she must have thrown them after taking them off of me.

I reached inside the pants pocket, and checked the phone.

Two missed calls. From Carlo. He hardly ever called, let alone did so twice. I immediately rang him, and he picked up right away. “Boss,” he said, slightly out of breath. “They…they…'' the worry in Carlo’s voice was uncharacteristic. Finally, he spit it out. “They didn’t make it.”

My heart sunk in my chest. I knew who ‘they’ were. Two men who had gone in to help fight for Frank had died. Of course, there was a lack of surprise, since Frank’s compound had blown up. Nonetheless, the two men were so young. They had had their whole lives ahead of them.

Dealing with the violent side of crime meant that I had to be emotionally unattached, but I couldn’t help but care about the men who made my wealth possible. Without the many who served me, I would be nothing.

I buried my head in my arms until I felt a slight tug at my shoulder.

“What’s wrong?” Adriana asked, her intense blue eyes searching deep into my soul for the source of my anguish. I couldn’t lie to her.

“Two good men were killed from the blast,” I said. “They were just so young. You know?”

She embraced me, and I couldn’t help but feel thankful that I had a good woman by my side. Even if she was so young.

We held each other for a moment, and then I felt her entire body soften up. She had something to tell me.

“Out with it,” I said. The expression on Adriana’s face told me that she wasn’t ready to tell me.Even more reason to tell me.

“Why does everything have to go so fast? Why can’t we just take it slowly?” She said.

Bull. There was something far more serious on her mind than the simple “let’s take it easy in our relationship” and I needed to know.

“Adriana,” I said.

She sighed. “I’m pregnant,” she revealed.

My first thoughts were that I had misheard her. My next ones were that Frank was definitely going to kill me.How about that? Frank, your grandson’s father is dead, and he’s your best friend.

“Who else knows?” I asked, wanting to get to business. Being a father meant a lot of things, but Frank’s disdain for our relationship was beyond the psychopathic mess that even the most hardened criminals displayed. I wasn’t afraid, but I needed to get ahead of it.

“Just the doctor,” she said. “I can give you his info.”

“No one else?” I asked. Frank didn’t really like doctors anyways, so I wasn’t too worried he’d find out by one. They were all too scared of him to even talk to him.

“None,” she said. “My dad won’t find out.”

I sighed. Of course he was going to find out. But there were other matters to attend to. The thought of Frank finding out was overshadowed by the danger he was in. Nothing, however, came close to the thought of being a father.

In all of my years, I hadn’t imagined being a father. It’s not that I didn’t want to have children, I was sure I had fathered some, but none of the past women in my life wanted anything to do with me.

Adriana was different.Could we be parents together?

“Do you want to have the child?” I asked.

“I just thought you should know,” she said, avoiding the question. It hurt me that she didn’t answer me outright, but I understood.

Just like me, she was still processing all of this. The addition of a child only made me want to protect her even more, and there was no one that would hurt the mother of my child as long as I was alive.

“I shouldn’t have even told you,” she said, getting up suddenly, picking up the clothes we had both thrown about the room without any concern less than an hour ago.

“Hey,” I said. “We’ll figure this out, no matter what you want to do.” I don’t know why I said that to her. Deep down, I wanted her to be the mother of my child, and if all the children I had had previously had made it, I didn’t see why our child didn’t deserve a chance.

Like his mother’s namesake, the boy would be a king.

Adriana sat back down and leaned her head on my shoulder, and I spent the rest of the night comforting her. We eventually made love again, though this time it was a tender love, the kind that only two star-crossed lovers can experience.
