I couldn’t believe it. Frank’s daughter was going to be the mother of my child, and the only thing that stood in the way was Frank’s pure hatred at the thought of us together. I resolved that night to change that because after all, I had saved his life.

ADRIANA

Luckily, I didn’t have to beg Brody to bring me back in his life. Not that I was that kind of girl, but all I wanted was him. He was rich, powerful, older…but it was so much more than that. He was the one who could protect me.

My love for him was a tender part of my being and my one and only weakness.

Him.

We remained together while my father was healing from his wounds.

For a while, it seemed like Daddy was never going to wake up.

I remember going with Brody the next day after we had had our fill of each other, the lust not wanting to break, like a fever that wouldn’t relent. Eventually we had tired out, where our bodies were no longer able to express anymore carnal pleasure for the other.

But as tired as I was, he was the one I could lean on, and he convinced me that we should go see my father.

With just the sheets wrapped around me, the soft fabric clinging to my sweaty, and shiny body, I pleaded with Brody not to go see my father.

“Don’t you think it’s a little too soon?” I asked.

However, Brody would have none of it. He placed his hand on my shoulder and squeezed my skin gently. The tingle I felt at his touch was the same even though we had exhausted the option of having sex yet again.

“You need to be there for your father,” he said, his voice full of authority. “Life is worth living and we can’t just let little things get in the way of those important to us.”

I was surprised that Brody would push me to value my father, who didn’t want him in my life.

“I don’t want to go alone,” I said.

“I’ll go with you,” Brody said matter-of-factly. The father of my child was a man of action.

Truthfully, I didn’t doubt that I would keep my baby, even though I feared that the shock of the news could kill my father. Brody wasn’t one for me to turn down, and what he said went.

I went with him to the hospital, where my father was still in an induced coma. Seeing him under was almost like seeing him dead, which had me in tears.

Brody’s embrace reassured me that everything would be ok, and his words were even gentler.

“Adriana, he’s going to love his grandchild, he’ll forget that I’m the father,” he said. It wasn’t necessarily what he said, but how he said it that made me feel warm inside. Yet, the fact remained that once my father was up and healthy, there was no telling how he would react to the news of my pregnancy.

We couldn’t always be there at my his side however. I had to get my own rest, and Brody had several matters to attend to. He steadily got busier as the days passed.

“I’ll have to stop by to see you and your father later,” he said one evening over the phone. I had been at my father’s side for the past few hours, and there was a shaking disappointment that he hadn’t shown at our agreed upon time.

With Brody there was no apologizing either.

“I’ll be there at eight,” was all he said, his way of letting me know that he would be late.

Before he showed up that evening, I had spent the better part of my time trying to get in touch with my mother, Dawn, and sister, Emma. Neither was very reliable, and neither wanted much to do with dad.

I called them both several times before putting my phone down. My father’s condition wasn’t the kind of thing that you texted someone, and I needed to talk to them both.

When the phone finally did ring it was my sister, Emma.

“Hey girl!” Emma said. She sounded like she had been drinking, and the sound of people in the background reminded me how much of a socialite she was.

“This a bad time?” I asked, hoping that she would let me go. Talking to her was frustrating at times, because everything was frivolous to her. Nothing had substance, and father’s condition would merely be an impractical inconvenience to her.
