“And you’re ok with that?” I was surprised. My father had very much been against the idea from the beginning, and he had been so overly protective of me that this was jarring. Are men just all crazy? How is one supposed to follow!

As mad as I still was, the fact that Brody had called my father about me meant a lot, and I guess I owed him as much as one call, being pregnant and all…

But of course,when I did call….No answer.

“See?” I said to my father, who again merely shrugged.

“He’s probably busy,” my father said. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go on a walk. You can join me if you’d like, but I won’t be much of a conversationalist.”

The fact that my father was talking to me so openly was a miracle. He really wasn’t much of a talker. Our rare conversations never lasted very long or go on very deep.

Today was no different.

As we walked along the fence line that separated the main road from the neighborhood, I found myself doing all the talking.

“Brody…” I said, struggling with what to say. My father said nothing, only huffing and puffing as he walked towards the main road’s sidewalk. From there, it would be nothing but the occasional hum of vehicles.

I struggled with my words, and was met with silence. Finally, I said, “Brody’s not telling me everything.” I wanted my father to help me work out the problem, but as promised, he wasn’t much to talk to.

“I mean, if he and I are going to be together,” I said. “He should tell me everything. Don’t you think?”

I was hoping my question would prompt an answer from my father. He continued walking. I even expected the mention of Brody and I being together to trigger him. I got nothing.

We rounded a corner, then my father started heading back to the house.

“Daddy?” I asked.

“Yes sweetheart?”

“You have nothing to say?”

“Just thinking,” he said. Then, “Talk to Brody.”

“What do you think of him?” I asked.

“What doyouthink of him?” He responded.

As frustrating as it was to not hear an answer, I was glad to spend time with my father, and that he was on the mend. We rounded a corner and made our way back home.

I didn’t knowwhat to think of Brody. My father was saying that he was good, and when I asked him again, he merely asked me a question. He was his best friend, yet his first reaction after learning about us was one of rage and rejection.

Back home, we sat down for coffee. Things had slowed down significantly since the attack, and I was growing restless. Before everything had started, I was about to be put in a position of trust, slowly taking the over the Business.

Instead, it felt like I was doing whatever Brody wanted me to. It appeared that he had bested me. I was still reeling from the fact that he hadn’t so much as explained himself.

I decided to take another route to get more information out of my father.

“What do you think we’ll do now that we’re weak?” I asked.

“Weak? We have Brody. We have our health. Last I checked, that wasn’t weak,” my father said.

“We have Brody?” I asked.

My father sipped his cup of coffee and shrugged. “He’ll always be part of the Business.”

“Is that all you care about? Business?” I raised my voice, not feeling like myself.I wonder if my dad even knows that I’m carrying Brody’s baby.

Dad shrugged. Then he drank more coffee.
