“You plan on having children with her?” I had forgotten that he didn’t know about her pregnancy. I wasn’t going to be the one to tell him. Adriana needed to break this news when she was ready.

All I could say was yes, and Frank nodded.

“Not sure if she’s the children type,” Frank said. “She’s always been pretty independent. It drove her crazy when she was confined at home. Even though it was what was best for her.”

“And about your retirement?” I asked.

Frank gave me an angry look. “You asking to be with my daughter is enough, let alone the idea of you having children with her. Now you want me to retire so you can take all of what’s mine?”

Insulted by his assumptions, I had to assert that he would have everything taken care of.

“No,” I said. “I simply want Adriana to take over for you. She’ll speak on your behalf. It’s what you wanted, right?”

He nodded after some thought. “It’s true. I just wanted her to handle the business side of things. I would be the muscle. She can’t be both though.”

“You know I can,” I said.

“And if something happens to you too?” Frank asked. There was his tender side. He wasn’t so concerned with my well-being, he just wanted to make sure that his daughter’s lover wouldn’t break her heart.

“I defended both of you,” I said. “Think I can’t handle your responsibilities?”

Frank grunted.

Relunctantly, he agreed. “If you can talk some sense into that young lady and get her to come up with a good plan, then yes, you can handle anything.”

So I had his blessing. How crazy how things can change in the span of just a few weeks!

I made my way through the city that day, and thought about what I would tell her. Life was empty without her, and I couldn’t make it clearer that she was the most important aspect of my life. I just had to convince her it was true.

I thought about everything that she ever liked and dug deep into who she was. Adriana needed to be an equal partner in our relationship, and she was still hurting from the pain of not being informed of my actions. If I couldn’t tell her what was going on, what reason did she have to trust me?

As I passed by a park with some children playing, their laughter ringing in my ears. I realized that the happiness of a couple wasn't in professing wild statements of love, but in their actions together. Together was the key word.

I made a call to Carlo.

“Can you take over for me this week?” I asked.

“Gonna get that girl back, huh?” Carlo asked.

“Of course, what else is there?”

Carlo agreed to help out.

“It’s a 24/7 kind of job,” I said. “Think you can handle it?”

“I won’t call, but on Monday, the baton goes back to you, Chief.”

I agreed, and gave him a quick set of instructions to prepare for my confession of love for Adriana

“Oh that’s pretty good,” he said. “On it boss.”

The plan was pretty simple, but it had to go off smoothly.

By now I had made it to her loft, and it was at that moment that I saw her. I had to take the opportunity.

I immediately made my way to her.

“I can’t live without you,” was the first thing I said.
