Not once did she make me feel like I was less of a man because of that either. In fact, she made me feel better by lifting me up. Without her, I was nothing, regardless if I had all the money and power in the world.

She was more than just a pretty face. She was the perfect woman for me.

We were in sync more than not, and we weren’t, she made sure to work out everything with me so that our relationship would thrive. There were no games, no petty issues, but simply the mature kind of love I would have expected from a woman my age.

And she was only 20!

Everyday I would wake up, and think to myself how lucky I was. She made me feel that way, and she reminded me about how she felt too.

In the meantime, her father spent his days recovering from his wounds. Though he was mostly mobile, we had to take care to get him back to 100 percent. There was never a time that Frank made me feel unwelcome in his life either, in fact, it was clear that he was appreciative of my love for Adriana.

Adriana appreciated me too, and words couldn’t begin to describe how I much I respected her. The results of her work were a clear indicator of how amazing she really was.

She managed to make sure that even Braden Reed couldn’t turn against us. Though Marion wasn’t his son biologically, Braden still loved him, and he did detest us for having to turn him into the FBI.

Adriana anticipated all of this. Before the Reeds could strike at the King Mafia with their newfound financial power (despite the FBI RICO’ing much of their assets), Adriana had set off the chain of important Chicago politics that would make the Reeds ineffective against us.

All it took was one night at a fundraiser.

The Reeds, come to find out, had not only placed stock in a mayoral candidate, but the Chief of police. It was during the fundraiser that Adriana had resolved to make this Chief of police pay for his association with the Reeds.

During the fundraiser, he had gotten a simple no from every single person that he was counting on to donate to his charities. And that was only the beginning.

Adriana had purposefully uncovered his tax records, which the Chief of police had attempted to hide. Her relations with important accountants, a few illegal activities that she oversaw, and the right placement of people all led to dismantling his efforts at secrecy.

At the fundraiser, he was upset that no one would donate to him, a key factor in his demise.

The night was a lavish one, and Adriana had tricked me into thinking it was a date rather than the night that she would eradicate any influence or hopes that the Reeds might have to take what was hers.

When the FBI came to arrest the chief of police, who was giving a speech on ethics within the community, I just about lost it.

“I thought we didn’t hide anything from each other?” I asked, somewhat peeved that Adriana had hid something from me. Not only was she good at what I did, she was great at making sure I learned the consequences of my actions.

“Now you know how it feels, Mr. The Less You Know, The Better,” she said smugly. I don’t know what it was, but I had to immediately forgive her. She made me smile with joy, and her way of doing things in such an excellent manner made me strive to be better everyday.

So, it was with splendor and drama that the Reeds were no longer influential anywhere near Chicago. The events of that fundraiser were so intense that word had it that no one should ever associate with the Reeds ever again.

The last I heard from them, Braden Reed had liquidated everything he had ever owned to maintain his solvency, something I doubted he was able to keep.

There wasthe final matter of reconciliation for Frank with his ex-wife and daughter. Adriana had told me that it bothered her to no end that her family was broken up.

“If I can’t keep my family together,” she said, “what makes me think that I can build one with you?” By this time, Adriana was showing, her pregnant belly now a prominent feature that elevated her already astonishing beauty.

“Honey,” I said. “You can’t control what others do, just how you react to it.”

Of course, Adriana had to prove me wrong. It was something I admired about her. Despite being a mafiosa, Adriana was anything but malicious. In fact, she had completely turned around our activities to more wholesome ones.

In her words, she didn’t want our children growing up in a violent world.

I finally broached the one matter that meant the world to me concerning our relationship.

“Adriana,” I said, gazing deeply into the eyes of the woman I planned to share my life with. But before I could finish my thoughts, she put a finger to my lips.

“Brody, I hope you know exactly what I expect you to do before I do this,” she said.

My impatience would have been costly to my dignity, but I knew exactly what she meant. Before I could ask her to marry me, I had to ask her father for her hand in marriage.

However, the only way that I could feel right about asking him for her hand, was if he was fully recovered. The day finally came when I could ask him for her hand in marriage.
