However, a month or so later, we were getting the ultrasound.

“Huh,” said the ultrasound tech.

“What is it?” I asked, worried that something was wrong. Depending on who you asked, you could say I had nothing or everything to worry about.

“See these three little circles?” The tech asked. My face went pale, and Adriana laughed at my reaction.

“You’re not giving birth to triplets,” she said to me.

As a family, we needed everybody- Frank, Dawn, Emma, and Carlo to help us.

Of course, we had to break the news to them, so we sat them all down to a nice dinner in one of Chicago’s most expensive restaurants. Emma had ordered a salad, to the tune of $500, and I had encouraged her to get more.

“What’s the deal?” Emma asked, sounding annoyed that I would push more food, even expensive food on her.

“Well, that’s the thing,” Adriana said. “Brody and I are having triplets.”

Five Years Later

Being a mother of four children wasn’t what I had in mind when I first got together with Brody. I didn’t even think I would ever see Brody playing with our little family so joyously. But with time, comes immense change.

My father loved his first grandson, Emmett, who was fast becoming the piano prodigy. After the incident where Carlo discovered that Emmett was musically inclined, Brody and I took to nurturing his gift.

As I was pregnant with the triplets, two girls and a boy, Emmett would play lullabies to them. Oddly enough, none of them caught the music bug. That was too bad, because, after a while, Emmett had settled down from his toddler days to taking music much more seriously which was nice since he practiced all the time.

His three siblings however, were a mess.

However, Brody was a confident, doting father, one who made sure to make time for his children’s needs. Because Emmett was gifted, we enrolled him in a special school for the arts in Chicago, the Hyde Park School of Music.

Many talented artists were interested in Emmett’s abilities, and we made sure that Emmett had all the opportunities he could have. This meant we had to work extra hard to keep his three siblings under control.

Brody was currently playing in the backyard with our three-pack: Gavin, Morning, and Sunshine. They each possessed distinct personalities and I couldn’t have been happier with the man that Brody had become.

My father, Frank King, was also a doting grandfather, though he was currently dating a younger girl, close to Emma’s age. Emma didn’t know, and, because of all the work her therapist had done with her, we all knew it was best to keep it a secret from her.

Speaking of secrets: the life of a former mobster was behind my father, but there were still old connections that tried to get in touch with him. Brody and I stopped many of them, but Daddy found it hard to leave his old ways.

Luckily, his love for Emmett, and jazz music across the city of Chicago, kept my father from getting in too deep with the violent ways of the mob. It was reported that a new gang had emerged, the Copa Kings, that Brody and I kept close tabs over.

After I had birthed the triplets, I had had to stop having children, much to Brody’s chagrin. Though he was sad we couldn’t have more, he loved me more and more with each passing day. I’m not even sure how that was possible, seeing as he did everything short of moving mountains to make sure our little family thrived.

I say little family, but the truth is that our family is pretty big and diverse. Daddy wasn’t the head of the family, nor was I the lone daughter anymore, as my estranged mother and sister had made up with him as a result of Brody marrying me.

As for Emma, she had gone on to discover the roots of her anxieties, which were the lack of family. As time passed, and therapy continued, Emma discovered her calling as an artist, though I had had to get her a day job as an art teacher at a local art school for kids.

Mom had eventually skipped out on town again, but this time, she made it a point to remind us that she would always be back. She and Daddy were ok friends, though they each got jealous over each other’s partners from time to time.

Then there was Carlo. I constantly tried to set him up, but Brody had eventually made me stop, as it put Carlo in uncomfortable situations. I guess dating isn’t for everybody.

But, I do believe that love is.

Brody and I had had a rough, tumultuous start. In the end, we brought everyone together. And, each time we were passionate, the spark never died down.

After we put the children to bed, Brody took me in the bedroom to show me what passion was really like. He still touched my body like it deserved and needed to be touched.

There was never a dull moment as he gave me a joy and sensual pleasure that endured. He never took it easy on me, and the heat of our lovemaking was one so intimate, one so special that I couldn’t forget it.
