“Your father is going to meet us there. He was planning on surprising you, to see if something was going on between us. He’s really been acting strange since that night you and I got together.”

I knew Daddy would do something like this. Right now, I was in danger though, and I didn’t care. He could be as protective as he wanted.

And now, I had Brody who would also go to the ends of the earth to make sure I was ok.

It was incredibly tantalizing thinking that this man, Brody, alaways at my father’s side, betraying him with his lust for me. And I was just as bad, if not worse. I wanted Brody to keep doing this, and the naughty thought of hiding it from my overly angry father only served to turn me on.

The fact that Brody was so cool about it, that he was willing to go into the lion's den so openly, was even hotter.

“Just be cool,” Brody said as we pulled into one of my father’s safe houses on the east side. We pulled into a driveway with a bungalow surrounded by wide verandas and a second story built on a sloping roof.

“What do I say?” I asked. I didn’t want to think of a lie, I wanted to test Brody. He needed to be just as good at this game as I was, and I marveled at the thought of this successful man giving me all he had.

Not everything is about money.

“Just follow my lead,” he said.

We entered the small home, where two guards cleared us.

“Sorry, boss,” one of them said when he realized it was Brody. “Mr. King wants to make sure it's safe, and one can never be too careful.”

I noticed they didn’t go to as great lengths to pat me down like they had Brody.

“No worries,” Brody said. “Frank! We’re here.”

“We?” Frank asked as he entered the room, his voice filled with venom.

“I thought I told Adriana to go to you. Brody, I don’t want to see you. When it comes to you two, there’s no we,” Frank said, pointing at Brody and me.

“Of course not,” Brody said. “Frank, I was on my way back from discussing some of the details of our agreement with the Reeds, and they want more. I figured that I should let you know.”

On Brody’s part, this was a brilliant move. Shifting my father’s attention to a rival gang was a great way to make sure he didn’t focus on Brody’s relationship with me. Even if Daddy didn’t know I was fooling around with Brody, he suspected it. And that was enough for him to fly loose at any moment.

Our hidden secret, the tension, and how cooly Brody handled my father brought a heat into my life that I didn’t even know I had. My father was already thinking about the Reeds, a rival gang that he found to be a nuisance.

Discussing matters of business has never been very exciting, but I paid attention to every detail the two men shared with each other. The Reeds were very stingy about sharing their territories as I came to find out, and, from what I gathered, part of Brody’s financing helped keep them at bay to make sure that the King Mafia could collect every dollar that belonged to them.

Men and their greed.I was a little annoyed at how much both my father and Brody cared about every dollar. They couldn’t let anything go, and the more I listened, the more I realized that they weren’t going to lose a single penny.

Our pockets aren’t tight, and we’re just going to war with another gang over pennies?

Of course, I say pennies, but when your father is the head of the mafia, and your lover is a billionaire who funds half of the businesses in Chicago, even thousands of dollars don’t phase you anymore.

I almost said something in protest to how greedy their actions made them out to be, but then I looked all around me. Every bit that they saved paid for our lifestyle- the guards, the houses, the car, the clothes, the hotel suites, everything.

And I was a classy girl.

I needed to be taken care of. I needed to be spoiled. To be lavished with surprises, and treated like the queen that I was. Of course, I also needed to be safe, but then again, when is it ever fun to just play it safe?

BRODY

Iwould have taken Adriana back home, but Frank was adamant that I leave. He really didn’t want me to have anything to do with her. The fact that I had brought her to his safehouse was already too much for him.

He and I had been friends ever since we were first building our empires, back in the days when all we did was talk about the dream. We both wanted power and influence, and now that we had it, it came with new sets of problems that we had to constantly adapt to.

To say that it was a headache to deal with our business complexities was an understatement. I was generally the one who finagled the right deals, and Frank would have his men enforce the rules that we had set.
