Jonas’s facial expression went lethal.

I was bawling now. Jonas sat down next to me and took my face in his hands.

“Tell me. Right now,” he commanded.

“I can’t. Please. It’ll make it worse.” I tried to shake my head in his hands. “Please understand.”

“No. I don’t understand. I’m not calling anyone off. You tell me right now what you’re hiding,” Jonas demanded.

“He came in and took my book and ripped some of my photos. He has more photos.”

My skin heated and Jonas’s face turned menacing. He started to shake.

“He’ll return the book. And he’ll stop with the photos,” I pleaded. “He’s just upset. Don’t ruin his life. Please. Jonas. Don’t do anything. Give him a chance to get himself together. I’m fine now. So please.”

“No you’re not, but you will be. I promise you,” he whispered.

He pulled me into his arms and held me His comfort and care was what I longed for, and I took it, molding myself against him. I couldn’t get close enough, and he patiently let me. He was a mountain of strength, and I was broken, but in his arms, I came together.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Iwoke witha start outside of the Waldorf. I hadn’t realized I’d fallen asleep again. I kept my eyes closed for a few extra moments and inhaled, taking in Jonas’s scent and the warmth of his body. I peered through my lashes and made out his expression from the light coming through the window. His beautifully sculpted face was set in stone. My heart lurched. I had become a disruption in his order. He’d spent most of the afternoon and part of the evening with me. From our short time together and public knowledge of him, I knew Jonas wasn’t the type to miss meetings or work. Yet he had managed to miss both because of me. He had put up with a doctor’s office and mini breakdowns over my ex. Hell, he’d even changed me, fed me, and got me in the car once I had settled down, not allowing me to pack a thing.

“You’ll get everything you wanted,” Dani had said.

Was this what I wanted? Jonas babying me?

I shifted, ready and not ready for him to release me. His full lips brushed against my forehead, and my heart fluttered as I imagined him holding me all night. But I couldn’t do that to him or me. My weakness was only making my dreams of being with him further away. Where I was right now, I doubted I would even make a companion for him. I didn’t have to worry about that, though. I had become a landmine of issues. Hell, I was crazy high maintenance. Most of all, Jonas didn’t belong to me. I was borrowing him from Melissa.

“What are you thinking?” Jonas asked, a frown marring his gorgeous profile.

“Nothing,” I mumbled. Then quickly answered “Melissa” before he pressed me for a real answer.

His brows returned to normal and he nodded. This time I didn’t look for the reassurance I needed, instead I simply climbed out of the car. I looked around at the high-classed clientele, all dressed in the latest and greatest designer wear.

And what was I wearing? A fleece with a tank top hanging out the bottom, sweatpants, and socks with ballet flats thanks to our quick exit from my apartment after our conversation about Declan. My hair was still nice from Dee’s magic, but still, I looked a mess. I dropped my head in embarrassment. That was when I felt Jonas’s arm settle around my shoulder, tucking me against his body.

I braced myself for what I’d find when I glanced up at him. Surely there would be a hint of embarrassment at being seen with me at his lustrous second home, dressed in such contrast to his dark designer suit. However, what I found instead was his air of confidence that defied my appearance and dared challenging. This became even more evident with the manner in which all responded to him as the bell person collected my things from David, and led us through the hotel and up to his suite.

My heart swelled. God, I loved this man. He caught my love struck gaze, and winked at me.

“Let’s go,” Jonas whispered.

We walked through the lobby like rock stars. Well, I was the lucky groupie and Jonas was the eye catching lead singer. All adoration pointed to him, which he acted oblivious to as we trouped up to his suite with the bell person rolling his briefcase and the trolley bag I didn’t recall packing.

Once inside his suite, Jonas still hadn’t released me. Instead, he reached with one hand inside his coat and tipped the bag person. He walked us over to the phone once the door was closed.

“Jonas, I’m not feeling dizzy anymore. You can release me.”

I giggled at the oddity of us joined at the hip. He ignored me and continued his call. I realized then that he was a quiet storm next to me.

“Steak, roast chicken. Salad, and fruit cups.” Once he completed the order, he announced, “We’ll have dinner and you’ll go to sleep. You can go take a bath now. Everything else, we’ll discuss tomorrow.”

I pressed my hand to my stomach. “Don’t you think we should talk? I’m not hungry—”

“I have work and phone calls to make right now. So just do as I say.” His tone was low and authoritative.
