I sighed and clasped it in my hand. Thunder Media was the same company that did the recent interview with Paul. Even after he told them we weren’t together, they were still snooping.

“I’m not interested in doing an interview or making any statements.”

“That’s my last card. Can I have it back?” Von held a plastic bag open for me to drop the card. “Sorry. I’m also a germaphobe.” He laughed at his joke. “Strange to find you here. Why are you at the hospital today?”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “My dad’s in surgery.”

“Sorry to interrupt. I only wanted to ask a couple of questions.”

“I have nothing to share, thanks.” I pressed my lips together.

“Are you familiar with Justus Black? Have you two met before Paris?”

I fumbled with the bottles, and one fell to the floor.

Von bent over and picked it up. “Any comment would help me out. Justus says he’d love to sit down and talk to you.” He stroked his goatee as his beady eyes scanned over me.

I clenched my jaw, the comment catching me completely off-guard, and turned away from him. He wouldn’t get any information for his column from me.

“Sorry. Maybe another time,” he called to my back.

What the hell would Justus Black want with me? He probably thinks I had something to do with Paul’s refusal to collaborate with him—just like what had happened with Linux.

They were still printing stories about Linux, who had tried to get public sympathy on her side by telling the press a joke about me ending her collaboration with Paul. She knew full well that neither Paul nor I would share our side of what happened. The public would likely find Paul too sensitive when, in fact, he was punishing Linux for the unprofessional and toxic environment she created by throwing herself at him.

On the other hand, a reporter approaching me can’t be ignored.

I took out my phone. Should I tell Paul?I bit my lip.So that he will think I need him to handle everything in my life? No. I can handle one reporter. And once the public knows we’re over, they will leave me alone…but will Justus?

It was another worry for later. Dad was more important than anything else.

I returned and handed Mom a bottle of apple juice.

Buzz.

Xander’s name popped up on my phone with an incoming call.

Finally.

I turned to Mom. “Sorry, It’s Xander. Do you think I have time to talk with him?”

She waved me away with her hands. “Go ahead. We won’t hear from the doctor yet. Tell Xander that I said hello, and I miss him.”

I headed outside. “Dad’s in surgery,” I said as I answered. “They found a kidney match for him.”

“Wonderful news! How’s Agata?”

“She’s holding up. She told me to tell you she misses you.”

“I miss her, too. Tell her to check her email. So let me get to what I called to ask you about. Are you still trying to leave Paul Crane?” He sounded like he disapproved.

I glanced over my shoulder and stood against the side of the building, where I could see anyone approach. “Yes. Can you help me out?”

“For one, Paul Crane’s people informed me that I can’t pick up your stuff. Apparently, you have to meet with him and remove it yourself.”

“But I can’t see him.”I can’t resist him in person.

“Why are you blowing up your life, anyway? You got the holy grail, Nadia. The dream home, money, clothes, car, and a hot as hell man fucking you every which way. What more is there to want?”
