I left and thanked Opal for her help with getting Isabelle’s clothing sorted for the morning.

“You’re very welcome, Nadia. Can I do something for you? You look tired?”

“I’m going to try to sleep. Thank you, Opal.”

I went back to tell Isabelle, but heard her weeping outside the room, and reluctantly entered.

“What’s wrong?” I asked in a gentle tone.

“My milk. I keep looking for it, and it’s dried up already.” She wiped her face.

I sat down next to her.

“I never expected to feel this way. But Doctor Casey said depression often happens after birth. Still….” She let out a loud sob.

I hugged her, brought her some tissues and a cup of water. “How about we watch a movie?”

She wiped her tears. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

We decided to watch the movie, Everything, Everywhere All At Once.

“You know I just watched Indiana Jones last week,” Isabelle trilled. “Oh, and I saw Michelle Yeoh onStar Trek Discovery. She was fierce.”

Isabelle turned out to be a movie buff and talked through every scene. Even so, she made me laugh. We got up and made popcorn and danced around the kitchen singing Lady Gaga’s, “Bloody Mary” before turning onWednesday.

We were back on the pillows in the bedroom when Isabelle poked my side. “So is Paul good in bed?”

“Uhmmm.” I covered my grin.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” She laughed. “So, I guess that since he’s dating you he’s not getting a surrogate.”

“I have no idea,” I mumbled.

“Oh, that’s strange.” She pulled up the duvet. “I’d think that was something he’d discuss with you.”

“We have discussed it; I’m just not allowed to discuss it.”

She chuckled. “Okay, okay. I’ll stop prying.”

Yeah, please do that because I actually want to be able to trust someone. It reminded me of Paul’s comment about being so wary of who he could trust. Between Sophie and Isabelle, I was feeling the strain of distrust.

Once the movie started, Isabelle was quiet, and I welcomed that. After a couple of episodes, I left for a shower, then climbed into bed. Before I put my phone on charge, I texted Xander.

Nadia: Isabelle is staying over.

Xander: What in fresh hell? Tell that Mean Girl reject to get the hell out!

Xander only knew that Isabelle was friends with Sophie, and to him she was no better than the company she keeps. He was never a person to easily forgive and forget.

Nadia: So does that mean I can’t talk you into going to a yacht party?

Xander: Will her BFF bendy bitch be there?

Nadia: Yeah. But it’s a party. Hundreds of people will be there. It’s her birthday.

Xander: You can’t be serious. Does your man know?

Nadia: Not yet. I’m still not sure I’ll go. But Isabelle is not like Sophie. She stood up for me when Sophie gave me the drugs at the party.
