“And we have probable cause. Any obstruction to the warrant or Ms. Sokol’s care will be recorded and can be used in a court of law.”

“Fuck you,” Landon grumbled, but walked a few steps away.

“We’ll get Nadia’s statement at the hospital, Mr. Crane,” the officer told Paul.

An ambulance siren blared, and I thought I saw Isabelle and Sophie in the crowd lined along the deck before officers surrounded me.

The paramedics carried me off the boat and onto a large ship. A sharp sting pricked my arm. “Paul, please…please don’t leave me.” But I couldn’t see him anymore.

My eyes fluttered close.

The bright lights in an unfamiliar room made me narrow my gaze against its powerful glare. It intensified the throbbing pain in my head. My hand lifted to rub my eyes and hesitated on the attached IV. The sound of a rapid beat brought my focus to the monitor nearby. I shivered and touched the white blanket covering me. Someone had removed my clothes and dressed me in a thin hospital gown.Hospital.Awareness and memories filled my mind, and it all came back—the boat.Paul was there.

“You’re awake. I’ll get the doctor.” Paul stood from a chair next to my bed.

Before I could speak, He left.

My heart sank.

A woman in a white lab coat walked back in with Paul. He sat in the chair again but didn’t touch me. “Hi, I’m Dr. Margaret Yang. I’m here to discuss your treatment. How are you feeling, Nadia?”

“Not great,” I whispered. There was a tremor in my hands as I tried to adjust the covers.

Paul cursed under his breath and folded his arms.

“Well, I’d like to ask you a few questions, and then, if you’re up to it, the police would like to take a statement—”

“Nadia will give her police statement while it’s fresh in her mind,” Paul snapped, raising his voice. He always kept complete control, but his temper had him on edge. However, it did not deter Doctor Yang.

“Mr. Crane, it’s not up to you. Now I know this is hard, but you must allow me to ask questions, or you’ll have to leave.”

I cleared my throat. “I will give a statement.”

“Apologies, Doctor Yang. Now, can you please tell her,” Paul said in an abrupt tone.

My eyes shifted to Doctor Yang who gave me a sympathetic look. “Tell me what?”

“Your abdominal cramping and sickness were from a miscarriage—”

“I-I was pregnant?” I stuttered.

“You were pregnant, Nadia.” Dr. Yang said affirmatively.

My vision blurred. “No no no no no. I bled before on the pill.” I shook my head back and forth and touched my flat stomach. “The pregnancy test were not positive,” I whimpered.

Paul came over to the bed and clasped my hand, that had turned clammy, tight.

“Miscarriages happen on the pill, though rare. Did you miss some doses?”

“Yes, I did, but…but I restarted. I didn’t believe I was….”

“Sometimes that happens, Nadia, and I’m sorry. You passed a lot of blood and your HcG levels were in the thousands. There was also a small blood clot present. We suspect you were about a month pregnant.”

A month.

So, that would make it six weeks since conception. Around the time we were at the Madison Square Garden concert. There had been passion, and lust, like always when we had sex. But I knew then that I loved Paul.

Had Nora felt that about Justus or had I just been a quick post-concert fling?
