Paul clenched his fist at his sides. “They’ll be dealing with me now.”

Dr. Yang returned. “That’s twenty minutes. Nadia needs rest.”

“Mr. Crane, can we please speak in the hall?” the Officer asked Paul.

“I also need a word with you, Mr. Crane,” Dr. Yang added. A nurse came over to the side of the bed and stuck a needle in the IV.

Paul turned to me, and our eyes met. His gaze was weighted with hurt and anger, and I lowered my eyes. The pain inside was too much that I couldn’t bear it.

“Gunnar, you take it from here. Nadia, listen to Gunnar and rest.” Paul followed them out of the room. And in my heart of hearts, I knew I’d lost him forever.

I am now utterly alone. Devastated. Alone.

Gunnar came to the side of the bed. “We will press for a criminal case. As for civil, we’ll go all in. Anything you need, Ben will be outside for you.”

“Will…will Paul come back?” I asked, my voice hoarse. It was a pathetic plea, but I couldn’t stop myself. I needed to know the truth, and Gunnar didn’t spare feelings.

“Not tonight. He’s left for the airport and has called an emergency meeting in NYC.”

I swallowed hard and turned my head away.

“Paul needs to fight back. He also went to personally pick up Mrs. Sokol.”

My pulse sped up. “Mom’s coming here?” I said, but then I knew she would for me.

“The nurse told me I have a few minutes, and you’ll fall asleep.”

I licked my dry lips. “Can you do me one favor?”

“Anything,” he offered without hesitation.

“Can I please leave the Hudson? I’ll be leaving soon anyway, but I can’t go back there.”

It wasn’t because of Isabelle or Sophie that I wanted to leave the Hudson. It was my utter loneliness inside the penthouse—the times I missed Paul so much. How he fully possessed my body and heart. How protected I felt in his arms. I very well may have lost him.I couldn’t bear it.

“Done.”

“Thank you. Oh wait. Kelsie Simmons was on the boat. She was cozy with Sophie and Isabelle.”

His lips curled upward. “Now that is most helpful, thank you.” He hesitated and my brows lifted. “I know my cousin. He would have wanted your baby. It’s what he wants more than anything else. Aubrey hoped she would get pregnant in Prague. She made a baby room that she wanted to reveal after they returned. That’s when Paul cleared his house.” His eyes shone.Gunnar loved Aubrey.

Their honeymoon in Prague.

“I’m telling you so you can understand him better. I owe you both that.”

I lowered my eyelids. A stab of pain went through my chest. I knew Paul wanted a child, but to hear it from Gunnar meant it was a more pressing desire than he had shared with me.

“The surrogate?”

“Was placed on hold when you returned from The British Virgin Islands. And that’s something that was surprising to me. The Paul I know always insisted on birth control implant or monitored birth control pills. Even after your last visit to Doctor Fosters, he didn’t take over. That’s…inconceivable for him and completely out of character.”

“Paul trusted me.”

A ghost of a smile appeared on his lips. “I think there’s more to it, and I’m not one to placate anyone.”

“And you knoweverything.”

“It’s my job and I care about Paul.” He sighed. “I’m sorry, Nadia. I was wrong about you.” I believe he said before I fell fast asleep.
