My fingers hovered over the delete button, but I stopped myself. Gunnar may need it for evidence.Too bad, Izzy. Get a lawyer.

I told Mom.

“What a horrible woman.”

“She mentioned something about a lawsuit.”

Mom nodded and took out her phone. “I saw this earlier, but I wasn’t sure you’d want to hear it.” She handed me the phone and my pulse jumped.

Paul Crane is suing millionaire Landon Styles, one of the partners of The Sugar Cookie Dating Match website.

Crane’s law associates have filed a fifty-million-dollar civil lawsuit accusing Mr. Styles of denying medical care to Ms. Nadia Sokol. She is alleged to have suffered a miscarriage of Mr. Crane’s child at a yacht party held by Mr. Styles.

Nantucket and New York City police officials have opened a criminal investigation on the boat party.

Sugar Cookie, a.k.a. Lollipop, an online dating company, is allegedly under investigation for prostitution and underage human trafficking.

Multi-Millionaire Trevor Livingston is also being questioned by the police. Through his lawyers he did not affirm, deny, or submit a comment.

The situation was worse than I thought. Sophie must have known what was happening with her boyfriend’s company. Nothing was clear, but Paul would make sure whoever was responsible would pay for it.

Sitting across from Mom, I thought about Nora and what happened with Justus. What must Mom think of me?

I flicked my eyes at her and lowered my chin. “I didn’t try to trap Paul.”

She reached over and squeezed my hand. “I know you, Nadia. Pregnancies can happen, even on the pill. I had miscarriages before my hysterectomy.”

“But I knew Paul didn’t want a child with me…he told me as much. I should have been more careful. Now Paul hates me. I’m just like Nora.”

Mom came over and hugged me. “You are nothing like Nora. Your situation is completely different.”

I wanted to believe her, but it seemed almost fate that the same situation repeated itself. I sold myself, I became pregnant, and the man I loved hadn’t returned to me.

The front doorbell rang.

My pulse increased. “Who is it?”

“It’s Dr. Foster,” Opal announced. “May I let her in?”

“Yes. Do you think you can help me get a new phone?”

“Mr. Crane sent a new one over. It’s on the hall table. Oh, and a bag was delivered from the boat.”

“Sorry, I missed it.” I went over and collected the phone, and it was already charged. I sent the number to Xander and put it away. Then I pulled out my bag and scolded. Nothing remained of it except for a broken strap. My other tracksuit, purse, compact brush, i-Pad, sketch pad, even my towels were missing.Shit. Now someone has my sketches. Will they be leaked or stolen too? With each thing that happened to me, I began to understand Paul’s trust issues.

Mom took it from me and put it back down.

“Should I throw it away?”

I shook my head. “I’ll leave it for Gunnar.”

Dr. Foster walked in and greeted my mom. “It’s been impossible to get you on the phone, and that’s understandable. However, I’d like to examine you myself. Can I persuade you to go back to the clinic with me?”

“Miscarriages happen out of our control,” Mom pointed out.

“But Nadia was on birth control. I want to make sure she’s healthy. I’m not only a gynecologist but also a fertility specialist. If there is an issue with Nadia’s ability to conceive in the future, I think we’d all like to have that information now. It could eliminate a lot of stress.”

I’m not sure the stress of betrayal and the heartbreak of losing…everything…could actually be alleviated.
