“Looks like fun.”

“It was fun. Oh, yep. When we couldn’t reach someone by phone, we just carried on. We had so much more freedom back then. I swear, everyone is so obsessed with every little thing now.”

“True. They have so much time for fun. We have no time to slow down now.”

Mom checked her watch. “Speaking of no time, I must pack my overnight shift bag. Let’s call the nurse on duty to see how Dad’s doing.”

My nerves jumped as she dialed the phone and waited for the nurses’ station in the ICU to answer. Mom recognized the voice of the person on the line.

“Hiya, Sandra, it’s Agata. Fine, thanks. And you? Yes. Oh, that’s good. I’m calling about the big guy.” Mom grinned and gave me a thumbs up, and I released the breath I was holding.

“Really? Why? But is that necessary? Well…okay. You’re a star. Thanks.”

She hung up and rubbed her jaw. “Dad’s been moved to a private room. He’s sleeping well, with no discomfort or any issues so far. Sandy’s been assigned to oversee him, and the doctor is on strict on-call for any signs of issues. I mean, these precautions are normal for his surgery, I suppose….”

I blanked my expression. “Maybe the doctor wants extra care since this is his second transplant, and Dad has other health problems.”

Mom nodded. “The new kidney is doing well. They haven’t restarted dialysis and there are no signs of rejection.” She nodded her head again and went quiet.

She suspected Paul had done something and was probably trying to figure out how she could navigate stopping Dad’s special treatment without pissing off the administration, which needed funding to keep in operation.

We watched one more episode before she had to go. After that, I cleaned up the dishes, took a shower, then went back to my bedroom and paced. I had wanted to call Paul all night and was nervous because I’d see him tomorrow. And I had to tell him I couldn’t see him anymore.

I took a deep breath and called. “Hello, Paul. Are you still in a meeting?” I told him when he answered.

“No. I’m at home. Did you open my present?”

“I did. You sent Givenchy.”

“Yes. Do you know why?”

He already knew, but still I answered.

“You know about the possible Givenchy internship.” I chewed my lip.

“I do. Tomas called when we returned from Paris to demand I make you take it.”

My mouth dropped open. “Make me?” I scoffed. “Tomas is as crazy as you.”

He laughed.

“Oh, wait. Oh, my God. Tomas said to make me take it.” I sat up taller and gripped the phone in my hands. My pulse jumped in my throat. “Does that mean they already decided I’m selected?”

“Yes, Nadia.”

“Me? Seriously?”

“Yes, you, Nadia. Tomas says it’s yours, and you deserve it.”

I grabbed a pillow and screamed into it, then laid back and kicked my legs up in the air.Givenchy chose me!Givenchy! For an internship in Paris! Me, in Paris, for the entire summer! This is unreal.

I picked up the phone.

“I expected to hear you scream. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to surprise you by telling you that I deviated from our trip to St. Barts for the French Riviera. Tomas and his wife Cecil were going to meet us there to celebrate.”

“Wow. Oh, my God. That’s so…wow.”

“Tomas had…clothing optionalideas because he wants to see you nude. Apparently, he also wants me to kill him.”
