“I was talking to Addy, and—”

“When?”

“Uh, a few minutes ago. I’m at their apartment waiting on Malorie to get home. Anyhow, she mentioned Mal loves chocolate and champagne. And I heard the Cosmopolitan has this romantic dessert tasting which includes both.”

“Okay?” Why the hell was he calling me?

“They’re booked for the next month, and I was hoping to do something sooner.”

He had it bad for this girl, but I didn’t have the heart to tell him this was probably a wasted effort for someone like Malorie. I doubted she was into him as much as he was into her. But I could possibly fix the dessert reservation for him since we’d done security for the hotel a few months back, so I had a connection there. “I’ll call the manager and see what I can do.”

“Appreciate it.”

“Is Addy still there?”

“Nope, I’m guessing she went to meet her new guy. Evidently, she met him online.”

Wait, what? Before my brain could step in, a wave of jealousy hit me.

“Sure hope he’s better than the last douchebag,” Craig added.

“Who is he?” Had I not been clear we weren’t to see other people?

“Don’t know, but when Malorie offered to set her up with my friend, she declined, so she must really like this guy. Anyhow, you’ll call the manager?”

“Yeah. I’ll text you once I talk to him.”

“Great, thanks.”

Frowning, I hung up. By the time the knock came a few minutes later, I’d worked myself into a mood. The type even my own family steered clear of. Opening the door, I watched Addison’s big smile deflate.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“You tell me.”

She came in, dropping her bag in the foyer. “Tell you what?”

“Craig told me about a guy you met on-line? Did you go see someone before you came here?”

I didn’t expect her laughter. “Seriously? You think I got off work, went home to pack a bag for my overnight here, and—what? Had a quick date first?”

When she put it that way, my assumptions were ridiculous.

“Let me save you from a stupid answer to a stupid question. It’s a no. But this morning Malorie asked where I’d been last night. And knowing rumors would spread in the office if I admitted I’d been with you, I made up a story about meeting someone, who I’d been with last night.”

“And the guy Craig wants to set you up with?”

She expelled a heavy breath. “I told Malorie I wanted to see things through with the ‘other guy’ first.” She poked at my chest. “And for the record, that means you.”

“I didn’t like hearing you could be dating someone else,” I admitted.

“Yeah, well, I didn’t like anticipating coming over here all day only to have you greet me with a frown. Again.”

Her refusal to deal with my grumpy mood had it disappearing. “What should I have done instead?”

“Be prepared to catch me when I came in and jumped on you like a spider monkey.”

“How do you feel about a do-over?”
