I’d meant to ask him about the cameras inside the house. “You spying on me?” It was kind of hot if I was being honest.

“Not yet, but I might just start, so be prepared.” He glanced behind him at someone coming through an office door. “I have to go, and I might not get time to check in, but know I’ll be thinking about you. Okay?”

“Same. See you soon.”

After he disconnected, I held the phone for a few minutes.

Dominic knocked on the door and poked his head in. “He still on the phone?”

“No, he had to go.” I filled him in on the change of plans.

“Damn, if this contract didn’t involve my future brother-in-law, I’d complain it isn’t worth the trouble, but it’s an important partnership.”

I’d forgotten Chance Maxwell was Kelsey’s older brother. “It is important.” Which is why I’d do anything to keep from disturbing Leo’s work on the contract.

Later that morning, I smiled at the incoming call from Brooke. She’d recently returned from her Doctors Without Borders mission and was back in Los Angeles. “Hey, you.”

“Hey, so I know this is going to sound crazy and last minute, but Lucas and I are on our way to Vegas, and we’re getting married tonight. Can you and Leo meet us at the chapel?”

It didn’t sound as crazy as she thought given I’d recently done the same. “Leo is out of town, unfortunately, but I wouldn’t miss it. When and where?”

That night my best friend married the man of her dreams in an intimate ceremony at the Caesar’s Palace hotel. Attendees included me, Brooke’s brother, Caleb, his fiancée, Daisy, and their little boy. Afterward we went out for a celebratory dinner.

Leo’s text made me smile.

“Do you have a gambling problem I don’t know about? Is that why you’re out at nine o’clock at a casino?”

“No, Brooke married Lucas tonight. It was last minute, and now we’re having dinner to celebrate. You’re up early.”It was six a.m. his time.

“Never went to bed. Will you text me once you get home?”

“Why when you can track me on my phone?”

“Because I like to know you are thinking about me sometimes.”

“Wanna hear a secret?”

“Yes.”

“I’m thinking about you all the time.”

Then in a move I’d never thought I’d see, Leo sent me a kissy-face emoji. I had to laugh out loud. Would I ever figure this man out?

ChapterForty-Three

ADDISON

On Sunday morning, I was woken by a piercing cramp followed by what could only be described as a rush of moisture when I climbed out of bed. “Oh, no, no, no.”

I clambered to the bathroom only to find my worst nightmare. Bright red blood soaked my underwear and dripped into the toilet after I sat down. I held my head in my hands and sobbed, certain this was a miscarriage.

Despite working in an obstetrics clinic for years and knowing miscarriages were common in the first trimester, it still hit me hard. After cleaning up, I went to find my phone so I could call the clinic. The person handling the after-hours line told me I could go to the emergency room if the blood loss was excessive, but otherwise I should wait until tomorrow morning for an exam to confirm the pregnancy was no longer viable.

It all sounded so clinical. As I sat there, my phone rang. Seeing it was Brooke, I picked up. But as much as I wanted to tell her what had happened—she was an obstetrician after all—I remembered this was her wedding weekend, and didn’t want to spoil it with bad news and professional questions. “Hey.”

“Hey. We’re heading to do a big breakfast before driving back. Want to join us?”

“Oh, um, unfortunately, I can’t this morning.” I hoped I was keeping my voice steady, but my friend picked up on it.
