Anastacia snorted, giving Knight an apologetic look when he caught her.

“I’m guessing you have someone in mind?” Grindel’s voice cut through the bickering.

“Franz has never really been one for pins, has he?” Baker eyed the officer in question.

“He’s at our board again.” Anastacia frowned, seeing Franz in front of the evidence board by Knight’s desk. A shiver went down her back that had nothing to do with the room temperature. There was something off about the officer. Something a little wrong.

“Again?” Grindel leaned to the side to see the man for herself.

“He’s been at the board a few times," Anastacia replied. "Once when I was there on my own. He tried striking up a conversation about Sammy."

“Mostly when Knight and Geist are out of the room. I’ve had to pull him away from the case myself a few times.” Baker frowned. “He’s been more concerned over their case than his beat.”

“He was also the one to give us the information about the tie clip,” Anastacia remembered and looked at Knight.“He was the one who handed you the paper for it.”

“I want to see him. I’ll call his super and have a chat before we bring him in.” Grindel waved at them to leave and immediately picked up the phone. “Get me Cardswell, please.”

They all turned to leave the office.

“Miss Geist?” Anastacia was stopped by the captain’s voice.

“Yes ma’am?”

She turned to the captain, who still had the phone at her ear. Grindel put a hand over the receiver and looked directly into Anastacia’s eyes. “Thank you for bringing this to my attention. But no more car rides with known criminals on your own, okay?”

“I will turn down the ride respectfully next time, ma’am.”

“All right, smart ass. Out.” She smirked and finally got the other line to answer. “Cardswell. I need you in my office now. We need to talk—”

Anastacia closed the door behind her and nearly ran through Mel.

“You okay?” Concern was heavy in the two small words.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” She checked for anyone glancing in her direction and then smiled at him when it was clear.

“Knight was persistent. I wasn’t appreciating his eyes going everywhere like that.”

“He’s worried about me. Come on, we’ve got to catch up with him and Baker to watch the show.”

“The show?” he asked as another officer walked directly into the captain’s office.

Franz had disappeared from the board by the time Anastacia made it back. Not that she was surprised. Knight had a case file in hand, his gaze moving between his notes and the board. Baker was in the seat Anastacia usually occupied, eyes trained on the squad room for the slippery officer.

“How did I miss it?” Knight hissed, closing the case file and examining the board again.

“Don't worry, you miss a lot of things,” Mel grumbled from beside Knight.

Anastacia gave him a warning glance, even if she was the only one to hear him. He looked back at her, shrugging in defiance.

“If he did it, the weapon that killed your vic could be the same caliber as our service weapon,” Baker theorized as she mulled over the possibilities.

The supervisor slammed open the office door and yelled for Franz to join them. He appeared from around a corner before he stepped into the office. The blinds closed and muffled voices were heard over the background noise of the squad room.

Baker shook her head, turning to Anastacia and Knight now that she was unable to watch the show going on in the office. “And hell knows most of us have off-duty weapons in the same range. I hate to admit it, but I've felt something off about him since he joined the station.”

“How long has he been here?” Anastacia inquired, looking from Baker to Knight and back.

Knight only grunted and pulled down a set of pictures from Sammy’s involvement in the case.
