“Mel?”

Popping it in his mouth he chewed on it slowly savoring the sugar-topped pastry. “I didn’t think I would miss the taste of this little delicacy so much.”

“Mel!”

He chuckled and booped her on the nose. “I’m here, Stacia.”

“How?”

He leaned forward, eyes locking with hers. “The short answer? The test was more than for your protection. My connection to you was stronger than usual bonds. Our souls are linked. They sent me back.”

“Why?”

“You know, these questions make it seem like you didn’t want me to come back.”

“Mel, please—”

“Every sensitive person should have a guardian at their back, a protector. Think of me as a guardian angel without the wings.”

“Like a spirit guide?” she asked tentatively.

“Close enough. I just have a bit more firepower than a spirit guide. Something told the powers that be you may need it. Heaven and Hell know I needed you. So, what do you say? You okay with me hanging around for another fifty years or so?”

Tears flowed freely down her cheeks, dampening her shirt as she nodded. He pressed a brief kiss against her grinning lips.

“I love you, too,” she whispered against his lips.

“Um... excuse me?”

Both of their eyes turned. The spirit of a thin, pale woman stood in a simple party dress. Her frame shook as her face contorted in confusion. Frowning, she spoke louder.

“I need help. I’m a little lost.”
