“Yes.” There’s no hesitation. I can see it in his eyes, it’s the truth.

Oh my God.

I reel back, stunned. “Someone tried to kill you…”

My mind races to who could have done it, but there’s no shortage of suspects. And I can tell, Sebastian is thinking the same thing. After my very public unmasking of him, there’s at least a dozen people who would love to take their shot to wipe Sebastian Wolfe from the face of the earth.

And end my life in the process.

“Avery…” he takes a step towards me, but I recoil, shaken.

“No!” I cry. “Don’t touch me.” I back away from him. “I can’t believe this, I nearly died because of you. But you don’t care, do you? We’re all just collateral damage along the way.”

I turn and run, as fast as I can in the snow. Emerging from the forest, I see the dark silhouette of the cabin across the snowy expanse and cut in that direction.

“Avery!” Sebastian’s voice calls behind me. “Avery, stop!”

I keep running, but I stumble in the snow, as Sebastian races after me “Avery, stop!” he yells. “The ice! It’s not safe!”

I freeze, looking wildly around.

Ice?

I remember too late what he said, that beneath all this snow is a lake. Frozen over for winter. But how thickly?

“What do I do?” I call, panicking.

“Don’t move!” Sebastian yells back. He comes to a stop twenty feet away from me, looking wildly around.

I automatically start moving towards him. “Sebastian…”

A faint cracking begins to sound. Sebastian’s eyes widen. “Don’t. Move.” He barks out.

I stand in place, terrified.

“Just stay right there.” He takes a cautious step towards me, then another. The cracking sound echoes. Our eyes meet, and I see the worry in his gaze.

“Seb—”

Before I can even finish, there’s another loud CRACK. The ice beneath him gives way, and Sebastian plunges into the icy lake.

AVERY

“Sebastian!”I scream, watching in disbelief as he disappears, sinking into the lake.

I rush forward, panic overriding my caution about the splintering ice. I reach the edge of the shattered ice in time to see him go under, his hands clawing at the edges to try and grab a solid hold. But he can’t, the ice is too sharp, and in his thick coat and hunting gear, he’s weighed down, pulled under the surface.

I stand there, dazed for a moment, watching him sink beneath the icy water.

Going… Going…

Gone.

The water closes over him, like he was never even here at all. Sebastian Wolfe, disappeared from this earth, leaving barely a ripple behind.

No.
