“Kate’s got it covered,” Manuel calls out from the other side of the kitchen as he scrapes the food and grease buildup off the flat top grill.

Well, that solves that.

“Guess she’s got a hot date,” Lexie whispers, waggling her eyebrows.

That’s right. It’s Valentine’s Day on Friday.

“Who would go out with Irene?” I whisper. At best, she wouldn’t even be called a handsome woman.

Lexie grimaces. “I don’t want to know.”

I pull the previously finished tray of glasses closer to me, finding a clean dishcloth to wipe them free of water spots. “Are you and Ethan doing anything for Valentine’s Day?”

“Tyler and Mia are going to this Anti-Valentine’s Day party at Element. We said we’d go, too.”

“The club you used to bartend at?”

“Yeah. I left on good terms, though. There’s only one girl there I can’t stand, and now I can tell her to fuck off if she gives me an attitude.”

I smile, wishing I had the nerve to say something like that to someone’s face.

“You have plans?”

I glance over at her. “Me?” A half laugh-half snort escapes me. “No.”

“You holding out for a date with Austin?”

The previous sound I was making turns into a sputter. “What?”

She rolls her eyes. “You’re so easy to rile.”

“Hey.” I throw the dishcloth at her. “Not cool.”

She smirks. “Sorry.”

The industrial-sized dishwasher beeps, signaling it’s done, and I pull it open, swatting away the heavy cloud of steam. Lexie loads the next tray in and I go back to wiping off the glasses.

“What’s Element like?”

“Never been?”

“No.” Who would I go to clubs with?

“Why don’t you come with us? Mia said her roommate and a bunch of her friends are going, too.”

“Okay.” That could be fun.

“And I could have Ethan invite Austin…” She doesn’t even try to hide her sly grin.

“I never said I was interested in him.” Said the girl whose heart is beating faster at the thought of going to a club with him… dancing together… on Valentine’s Day of all days.

She gives me a look like I’ve got about two working brain cells and one just gave out. “I’ve seen you with him twice. That’s it. Two times. You didn’t need to say anything out loud.”

I tilt my head down to hide my heated cheeks. What I did at the boxing gym may have been a bit much.

“He’s not interested in me like that,” I mumble. “I mean, he’s… Well, look at him. And then there’s me.”

“You try to do a nice thing,” she mutters, shaking her head. “Do you want me to have Ethan invite him or not? They’re training across the street right now.”
