“Well, I’m sure you won’t be out the whole night. I can stop by after.”

“I can’t make any promises. I have no idea how long we’ll be.”

One side of his mouth crooks up in a smirk. “You’re not a party girl. You won’t be out long.”

Something about how he says it rubs me the wrong way. Not quite condescending, but…

I mentally shake my head. I’m just in a bad mood. Seeing and hearing things that aren’t really there.

“I’m going to wait in the lobby for my first person,” I tell him, hugging my folder to my chest.

“Sure.”

He doesn’t move out of the doorway, though, forcing me to brush past him on my way out.

Why have things been so weird with him lately? What’s going on?

I don’t have long to ponder it because my first participant is already in the lobby. I greet her, the next hour and forty minutes flying by until it’s Austin’s turn, the sight of his blond hair brushed back from his face bringing a smile to my lips.

I wave at him from my spot at the entrance to the hallway, and as he spots me, he smiles too, something electric flashing through me I can’t explain.

A sudden flutter of nerves passes over me, even after thinking earlier I can act normal around him now, and I’m quiet as we walk toward the room.

God, I’m being stupid.

“We’re doing cue-controlled relaxation today,” I blurt out in the middle of him removing his jacket.

“Okay.” He looks down at me, that same smile lingering on his lips. Have I ever noticed how good they look? Usually, the beard distracts me, but now that I study them, they’re actually kind of… sexy.

Oh God, I’m staring at his lips, aren’t I?

I turn away and open the door once we reach it, holding it for him.

He settles his jacket on the back of the chair he always sits in. “So what exactly is cue-controlled relaxation? You know you have to explain everything to me like I’m dumb.”

“You’re not dumb.”

He blinks at me. “I…”

Okay, maybe I said that a little forcefully. “You keep referring to yourself as not smart, but that’s not true at all. There are different types of intelligence. It’s not all about having a high GPA or test scores.”

He’s silent for a moment. “What other kinds are there?”

Of course he’d ask that when I don’t have access to a computer. “Off the top of my head, the ones that people think of the most are logical and linguistic. But there are others like being musical or how you relate to others. Two you’d probably score high in are kinesthetic and spatial.”

His brows narrow slightly. “Those are real things?”

“Yeah. And they’re important. Our society couldn’t function if we didn’t have people that think in different ways.”

He nods. “Thanks. That…” He blows out a breath, raking a hand through his hair. “That’s nice of you to say.”

“It’s the truth.”

He smirks. “If someone as smart as you says I’m smart too, I guess I have to believe it.”

I bite my lip to hide my smile as a warm fuzziness fills my stomach.

“You probably score high in that one about relating to others,” he tells me.
