“Amy, I could do things to you that would have you begging for more. I could have you losing control and screaming my name until your voice gave out. I promise you, Amy, we could have a lot of…fun.”

I lifted my hand and softly stroked the impossibly smooth skin stretching against her collarbone and trailed my lips on her ear, before moving down to her neck, so soft it was barely a kiss. I leaned away slightly to look at her as she bit her lower lip and a gorgeous splash of pink colored her cheeks. I brought my hand up to her chin and slowly tipped her face toward me before lowering my mouth for one soft, gentle kiss.

At least, that’s what I planned. But one kiss had me needing more. My lips dropped down against hers. It took only a second for her to open up to me and I felt myself crush against her, pushing her back against the wall. Her hands were around my neck, playing with my hair on the back of my head.

I slipped my tongue into her mouth, and Amy let out a breathy moan as I teased her and tasted her. She tasted sweet and sparkling.

Her body swayed more firmly into mine.

“I could make you feel good in ways you didn’t think possible,” I gasped, my voice hoarse with wanting and lust, breaking the kiss before I went in for more. She seemed eager. Her hands were definitely eager, at least as they slipped under my suit jacket and ran up my back and then my chest.

But then, she was breaking away from me and…laughing? Was that a fuckingsnort? My body felt like it had been doused with ice water as I quickly took a shaky step back. Amy’s head was thrown back, not with my name on her lips, but with laughter. This wasn’t right at all. This wasn’t what was supposed to happen.

What the hell was even happening right now?

I scrubbed my hand across my face, completely unsure about how to proceed. Obviously, she wasn’t into whatever was about to happen. What was about to happen?

Was I really thinking I would just fuck this woman in the hallway at our high school reunion? God, this had all just gotten so out of control. And so quickly.

“Ohmigod,” she gasped, between fits of laughter and a hiccup. “Isthiswhy all the women flock to you?”

“Uh..” I smoothly replied, clenching my fist. Okay, that fucking stung. Had she just been playing me this entire time? No way. She hadwantedthat, right? Right?

Oh, Jesus, did I just assault her in the hallway?

I opened and closed my fist and tried to shake out the tension.

She lightly patted my chest, and I just wanted to slink away in humiliation. I had never been humiliated like this before.

“I’m quite underwhelmed, Reed. I think I’ll just stick with my vibrator tonight. But thanks for the effort.”

And she waltzed right past me and walked down the hallway, stilllaughing. I cringed when I heard another snort.

Chapter 8

Amy

Itwistedmykeyin the lock and pushed the door open to step into the welcoming heat of my apartment.

I left the party early. I couldn’t stay after that…incident in the hallway with Daniel. What was that? I was sure, or maybe just hoped, that Cassie would already be asleep. Thoughtfully, she had left the living room light on for me. We had shared the apartment together for three years now and, although strangers at the start, were now very good friends. Here, in Marina District, housing was hardly cheap, not that it was anywhere for a thousand miles. But this place belonged to Cassie’s aunt, who had owned it forever. She leased it to us at an affordable rate while she lived the good life in Palm Springs.

Cassie was an interior designer and spared no effort in making sure the apartment looked beautiful. She was also not afraid of color or bold patterns. The space had an eclectic and curated feel, with most of the decor coming from vintage shops, flea markets, and estate sales. Cassie loved things that told a story. It suited the apartment, which was older with loads of character, like arched doorways, built-in floor to ceiling shelves, a fireplace in the living room, and massive windows.

I slipped off my shoes inside the door and promised myself I’d put them away later. This rented dress needed to come off before I got it dirty, but I couldn’t make it past the plush, dark blue couch that was calling my name. I sighed deeply and closed my eyes.

“That bad, huh?” Cassie said, walking from her room with a bowl and a mug in her hands. I must have been pretty out of it, because I jumped in surprise.

“Jeez, what are you sneaking up on me like that for?”

She grinned.

“Obviously, I wanted to startle you.”

She set her dishes on the coffee table and sat next to me, pulling a blanket around us. Cassie was one of the most genuine people I knew and I was so happy to have found her as a roommate. She had become my best friend, and we balanced each other out. I was very serious, and she was creative to the core. Her short bob, naturally, was dyed bright purple. She packed a lot of personality into her petite frame and her eyes always showed every emotion she was feeling.

Cassie tucked her legs under her chin, like she usually did when something was on her mind.

“So, how was the party?” she asked. “Find anyone interesting?
