I walked back into the lab in high spirits. Today was going rather well so far. I had expected it to be filled with a lot of planning work, done alone among a grumpy team. In the end, I didn’t really have much to do since my team members were all stunned by my reports and were making great progress on their own. They all learned what they could from the information I gave them and asked me questions about what they did not understand. They were smart, no-brilliantresearchers, and I was suddenly realizing the caliber of resources I now had. At my fingertips.

Harvey walked up to me with an excited look on his face.

“How soon can we start the procedures to begin testing for production?” His eyes filled with curiosity, shocking me.

“Well, as soon as Damien is ready for us,” I replied. “We will need his expertise on the chemical process to start curating test samples.” He nodded his head and went back to his workspace.

“The boss is in your office,” Auburn notified me.

I walked into the office and found him sitting on my desk. I let out a slight sigh, hoping he couldn’t hear me.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“I’ve come to see you, of course,” he replied with a hint of uncharacteristic nervousness in his voice. “I mean, I wanted to check how you're doing and hear about your progress.” He corrected, as he picked up a clipboard on my desk.

“Please put that down,” I insisted.

“What's this?” He held the clipboard toward the light as if that would explain its contents.

“It contains everything we would need to start making experimental doses of the formula in my report.”

“It looks like you’re about to make a nuclear bomb.” He laughed.

“Very funny,” I said dryly. “I'm submitting that to Damien.”

He dropped it immediately, and I wondered what was going on between them. I knew step-brothers weren’t always very close, but Daniel’s attitude always seemed to change at the mention of Damien’s name.

“So, you are getting closer to the goal of a cure?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Fingers crossed, the team is really optimistic and I believe that once we combine our individual research and observations, we will see success in no time,” I assured, trying to calm the anxiety his words emanated.

“Any idea how long that will be?” He tapped his fingers on the desk.

“Let’s just say in a couple of months.”

“Give me your best estimate, Amy.” He stared at me expectantly.

“If we're lucky enough, we should be in the clinical trials stages by the end of next month,” I finally said. “Is everything alright?” I asked. He wasn’t his usual self today. The boldness and certainty he always spoke with were no longer there.

“Everything is great. How is Jordan?” he asked. I had been a fool, I had forgotten to thank him in person.

“She’s a lot better and will be getting off the respirator today. The doctor said her respiratory organs have stabilized, and she's all good to go.”

“That’s good news. With your help, I know she’ll be out of the hospital really soon.”

“I really hope so. Thank you for everything you did for me last night, Daniel.” I walked over to hug him.

That morning, Jennifer had received a message from the hospital notifying her that someone had paid for all the treatments Jordan received. I figured it was Daniel, but I didn’t want to bring it up because I knew he would obviously deny it. But the generous deed was not unnoticed or unnoted by me. And I was extremely grateful.

Chapter 26

Daniel

Shehuggedme, thatwas unexpected. I could see from the gleam in her eye that she truly appreciated all my efforts, even though I did not see them as tangible enough.

Strangely, I wanted to be there for her. She had shown so much concern for her sister and I just had to help in whatever way I could.

I was seriously hoping Amy wouldn't be able to see how uneasy I felt. I had asked her too many questions regarding her research. If I kept this up any longer, she would probably realize something was up.
