“Then you wouldn't need to come to my house on a Sunday afternoon to try to convince me,” I replied calmly. She hissed.

I wondered if the news of my father’s health really did affect her or if she just saw it as another opportunity to get what she had always wanted. I had no idea what my father’s deal with gold diggers was, but they were always this scheming. Anastasia was smart, but I had no time to deal with her baseless suggestions. With the look on her face, it was evident that we were at war now. Damien, being the CEO of Reed Biotech had always been her ambition. I had made it very uncertain and she was not happy about that. She was desperate, and her next best course of action would be to try to have me removed from the office. But she didn’t have the resources to do that. She didn’t have that kind of influence.

“A word of advice. Don't make me an enemy, Daniel.”

And with that one threat, she left.

Regardless of our current relationship, my father was still myfather. I still loved him. He was the only person I could hate and still manage to love at the same time. I realized that as perfect as he seemed, he had his own battles to fight, too. I marched into my office the next morning and hastily sat at my desk. I turned on my computer and continued the research I was working on the night before. If all went well, the feds were going to partner with Reed Biotech. I tinkered over what my next course of action would be, but the thought of my father's condition clouded my mind.

Was he really going to die? My mind replayed my conversation with Anastasia over and over again. I tried to shrug off the thought by focusing on the agricultural biotech idea that I had initially pitched to Evan.

Speaking of Evan, where was he? He was supposed to be here before me. Maybe he got delayed in traffic?

The door opened and Evan came in wearing an oversized blue shirt over distressed jeans. He always dressed like that at the end of a fashion event.

And he never knocked, just barged in like the entire place was his.

“You’re looking reinvigorated this morning,” he said as he noticed the smile I plastered on my face.

“So do you. Did you meet some woman in Paris?”

“More like multiple women,” he laughed as he sunk into the couch.

I shook my head at him.

“I'm disappointed.”

“Are you sure about that? You were excited when I told you about my escapades during last year’s fashion show.” Being the owner of one of the biggest clothing companies in the world, he was often invited to fashion events all over the globe.

“Oh please, I was disgusted. You know I was.”

“Whatever, you are just jealous,” he laughed. “So, have you told Amy about what’s going on?”

“No,” I said, as he rolled his eyes and slumped deeper into the couch. “But, I've found a way to avoid all that.”

His eyes twitched as he sat up at lightning speed. “Shoot.”

“You remember when I told you about agricultural biotechnology?”

“Yeah, wh…”

“I sent a proposal to the government,” I cut him off. “A few different agencies are looking for a partner in biotech innovation.”

“And?”

“Well, I know we have a lot of competition. I was pessimistic at first, but now I have some good news.” I couldn’t help the excitement in my voice.

“What is it? Don’t make me guess.”

“One of my acquaintances who works there informed me that Reed Biotech was supported by almost every researcher.” A big smile formed on my lips. “They love this fucking company.” I laughed.

Evan slow clapped.

“Well played, Danny. That’s great news and will go a long way toward making everyone forget about all of the crap flying around.”

“Yeah, I am currently working on everything the researchers will need if the deal goes through.”

“Whenthe deal comes through, you mean.”
