“Yes.When.” I smiled.

“We might not need Amy’s research after all. This is agriculture. A major breakthrough in this field is as humanitarian as it gets. And working with the government? That's all the help we need. We can just label it as research to end world hunger or something. The media will eat that shit right up.”

“Exactly. The big question now is which of them will record something significant first?”

“You should ask Amy for a time estimate,” he advised.

“She’s not sure, but she said they’d possibly be in the early stages of trials about a month from now.”

“That can’t be right. She just started the research a couple of weeks ago,” he said with a puzzled look on his face.

“That is where you are wrong, Evan. She started the research years ago, on her own. She just reached a stage where she needed help and adequate funding,” I responded, as his face settled. “The results are close to coming to fruition for her, so close. I know it.”

“Well, we have no time to waste. When are you expecting a response from your proposal?” Evan was taking this more seriously than I thought. He probably didn’t want to break Amy’s trust either. He had been the one to approach her about her work, so if anything went wrong, he would definitely share part of the blame.

I wanted to tell him about my father, but I didn’t want to ruin the mood. Evan placed some calls to the connections he had at the government. Even though he was in the clothing industry, he had a lot of connections literally everywhere. His company had a net worth of over a billion dollars, and they were definitely on top of the food chain. He helped me a lot in the past and now here he was helping me again.

“Yeah, Noah’s company has had a lot of government contracts in the past. They are the favorites right now. But that may change due to the fact that their past projects have a relatively low success rate,” he explained. “That was what a friend from the FDA told me.”

“That's good news. I am going to start making preparations, if…”

“When,” he interrupted.

“When the deal comes through. Everything has to be in place.”

“Tell me if there is anything I can do to help,” Evan added.

I went down to the lab to get an update from Amy. I opened the door of the lab and it was so different from the last time I entered. There were various test tubes and weird scientific objects that littered every table. The scientists were busy handling chemicals and looking at screens. The air was different; reeking of chemicals. And the noise! Equipment beeped and buzzed all over the place. The scientists were also making multiple requests at the same time, and at the center of it all, there stood Amy. She coordinated the entire team efficiently, moving from one section of the lab to another, and assisting her team with whatever they needed. I stood there in awe of her. She noticed me and walked up to me.

“Not a good time. You shouldn’t be in here, Daniel,” she hastily said as she adjusted the gloves on her hand. She looked different today. Her eyes burned with the same intensity I saw when I first offered her the contract. I could see that this was indeed a bad time.

“Just wanted an update,” I whispered, trying not to get noticed by the others who were still engulfed in their work.

“As you can see, we are already testing out some samples. Nothing major yet, but things are looking good so far. We might have a major breakthrough by next week if we're lucky,” she explained. Her face was too tired to make the expression but her voice did not fail her. She was thrilled.

“That’s good news,” I replied nervously.

“You don't seem too happy about it,” she pointed out. “You wanted an improvement on the status of the production of the cure as soon as possible, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I did but…”

“Amy, I need your help,” a distant voice called out.

“I have to go, Daniel. Maybe I can tell you more about our progress later this evening,” she said, forcing a smile onto her lips.

“That would be great,” I replied. “Come up to my office whenever you’re free.”

With the way things were going at the lab, I wouldn't be surprised if they succeeded soon. Too soon. Things were moving so fast, even faster than how things had gone between me and Amy. I thought of asking Amy to slow down her research, but I quickly dismissed that thought. I had to remind myself that she was doing this for Jordan and it would be very selfish for me to try to slow her down.

I was thinking of what to do next when my phone beeped. I quickly clicked on the email notification and opened the attachment. Reed Biotech had been awarded the contract. I rushed down to my office to get the paperwork ready.

Chapter 30

Amy

Iwasmentallyandphysically exhausted. The excitement had kept me going during the testing but now I was fueled by something different: three cups of black coffee. We were done for the day and, as usual, I was the only one left in the lab. I had to make sure that the reports on the work we had done today were all accurate. I looked at my watch. Nine pm already. I had to get out of here. Daniel wanted to talk, but I was too tired for that. I could feel the effects of the caffeine wearing off, so I hung up my lab coat and wearily packed my bag.

I hurried out of the lab after requesting an Uber as it was already close by. I waited outside the building when I saw a familiar car: Daniel’s.
