“How did you know I'd be waiting outside?” I asked.

“I didn’t,” he replied as he assisted me in moving my bag to the back seat. He punched in my address on the car’s control panel as he switched the gear to drive, but something was different. His face didn’t carry the usual stern look. He was happy, and it was obvious.

“You’re in a good mood,” I noted, staring at him as he was driving. There was just something about the way he gently held the steering wheel that started to warm my insides. It was hot and sleep was suddenly the last thing on my mind.

“Depends on your definition of good, but I believe I am always in a good mood,” he replied, focusing on the road ahead of him.

“That’s a bald faced lie,” I chuckled. “So about the research, we were able to do a lot of tests today, but it’s still fingers crossed at this stage.”

“What do you mean?” He asked, the smile on his lips getting more evident.

“We’ll need more time. Today's results were not as promising as I had expected,” I calmly replied, I didn’t want to disappoint him because he was my sponsor. I knew that as much as I needed this, he did too.

“Oh. Yeah, don’t worry about it, Amy. Take your time.”

That was a response I was not planning to hear at all. Was this really the Daniel Reed I knew?

“You’re okay with the results coming in later?” What was going on with him?

“Yeah, don’t stress it,” he replied. “Are you getting enough help, though?”

“Yeah, definitely. The team has been great and Damien has been so helpful.” I suddenly wished I hadn’t mentioned Damien.

“Damien?” He ignored the car horns behind him, signaling him to move before the traffic light turned red again.

“Damien, he helped a lot today.”

“How thoughtful of him,” he said dryly.

I let a full minute of uncomfortable silence pass, thinking carefully about how to construct what I was going to bring up next.

“So… are we going to talk about us?” I finally summoned the confidence to ask.

Daniel was silent for a long moment.

“I don’t know. Is there anything to talk about?”

“Wow,” I blurted out as I turned to face the window. “I mean, I know how I feel about you. But I just don’t know if you feel the same way.”

He sighed. “Please don’t take this the wrong way, Amy, but I don’t want there to be a conflict of interest between us.”

“You mean you want both of us to be on the same page?”

“Yes, and I know you have your reservations about me.”

I rolled my eyes in the darkness.

“Of course I do, but that’s more reason why I need to know how you feel about me. Okay, so, hypothetically, if I told you that I had feelings for you, would you say it back to avoid a conflict of interest?” I asked.

“To be honest, maybe.”

“Oh, wow.”

"That doesn’t mean I don’t have feelings for you, Amy."

“So youdohave feelings for me?” I blushed.

“I didn’t say that now, did I?”
